You want pics of a supermoon?

:rofl:Sorry. I'll grow up soon. I often tell people I am a geologist because I didn't progress much beyond 3rd grade.

BTW, I hope you all enjoyed the rep I handed out like candy last night. I should have drunken TW moments a lot more often. I might even get cmack back to a green rep bar.

If only my parents had recognized the warning signs, I wouldn't have any idea what a conodont is.

Actually... nevermind. My thesis is about them and I still don't know what a conodont is.

Conodonts are basically the teeth of a critter that was kinda like an eel. There are only a few fossil casts of the entire critter that have been found, so for a long time they were known only by their teeth. The eel-critters themselves are called Conodontophora ("bearers of conodonts") to avoid confusion with just their teeth. They lived about 200 to 500 million years ago, in the Carboniferous period.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conodont

And here's a geologic time scale, for your reference. Scroll down to the part where it's laid out as a chart:

Interesting. I may have to try to recover some teeth sometime. We have limestone from that time period.

They're microfossils, so you *might* find some, but it's not one of those drive-up-to-a-roadcut-and-load-up-the-fossils situations. Some of the critters were as small as 1 cm in length, and the biggest one ever discovered was about 40 cm (roughly 15 inches), and the teeth are, of course, tiny. The most success I've had finding them was on flooding surfaces in gas shale (but they are also found in limestone) and it involved taking 5 gallon buckets of shale, washing it in kerosene, and looking at it under a microscope one tiny scoop at a time. It is the very definition of tedious and the memory of it remains a major reason I drink to this day :D
