automatics are way more complex to rebuild, it better to get one done with a core exchange.

 

Yeah I didnt think about that.....Id go with the used one. 60k isnt bad

 

unless that 60k miles was used racing.. if so HELL NO!

We found a freshly built one with 3 yr warranty for 2200 through mikes autozone

 

Yeah, imo the extra 2 years is totally worth the 300 extra bucks. Let's get him and us the piece of mind that for the next 3 years it won't be his tranny keeping him off any trails.

 

This was the focus on purchasing previously.

When I mentioned this to the shop he just cringed and said his come from Toyota, Autozone's don't.

 

Hmm, Toyota rebuilds Transmissions? I think they are contracted out and toyota distributes them thru their parts dept.

Either way a freshly rebuilt one over a used one.

 

The warranty is through Toyota, but I wasn't talking about a used one.

 

Jeezus, I sold a 4wd auto trans for like $200 a couple years ago! Pulled it out to do a manual swap..

Come to think of it, have you considered converting to manual? Thats what I would do, just gotta get tricky with the ECU to avoid trouble codes, when I did it I ended up changing out the harness and ECU as well...since it was on the customers bill.

If it were me, I would just trick the ECU so it wouldnt throw codes and swap the stuff out, manual trans almost never break, just have to replace your clutch every blue moon..

 

Also how about tearing his current one apart and rebuilding it, it sounds like he may not have enough mechanical expertise to do that, autos have lots of parts in them, ask me how I know, lol...

But that depends on what failed, since I dont know what even happened, did he just loose some gears, or what??

I may be able to help, after all was a Toyota Master tech many moons ago.

 

It's not so much "mechanical expertise".. I call it "common sense"

not to tear into unfamiliar territory if ya catch what I'm getting at, when you find the average cost for one of todays automatics being rebuilt is a couple grand, tells me right off we're not talking about just re sealing the valve body or front pump & changing out clutch packs..

Brother, I dropped the pan & recovered about half a pound of metal, & I dont mean the usual tranny "flash". I'm talking chunks of metal/gear teeth, etc;

Probably the planetary gears unloaded around the sun gear & became lunch on a high metal diet

 

So whats the latest word Doug?

 

Well , I'm waiting on a couple guys to get back with me about springs, I gotta make an appointment for a member in OC to get them done...


& it's not looking good for Ryan's SUA lift, I think I'll cut him loose & for other alternatives if I can't locate a suitable set of donor springs....
