Volant Lean Fix

    I installed my Volant CAI yesterday and noticed immidiatley that it was running lean via my ultra gauge. There where a couple things that I tried today to improve it and it worked!

    1. Make sure that the MAF is perfectly level, both in the MAF housing and how the air duct is rotated.
    2. I went to napa and bought a complete vaccume hose for the FPR so that you arn't any longer using a butt joint between two hoses

    Next I might try to make an insert to go in the Air duct by the MAF to reduce the cross section of the duct.

    BTW I was at a fuel trim of about -20 to -18 and now I'm sitting about -7.5 to -10!

    They tend to range from 1 to -5 I would say around -3.5 on average.

    Those numbers are indicative of running rich......Negative being the amount of fuel trim the computer is taking away. Whats your O2 sensors reading? Regardless.....as long as they are in single didgit readings, you should be fine.

    Exactly the maf is reading wrong and causing the motor to trim down the amount of gas possibly?

    Believe it or not the one I built and yes sold had absolutely no issues! I wanted the volant air duct so it would look right in the engine bay... That one had normal values when tested...

    I think that my last one worked because the air duct cross section was closer to stock than volants...

    Need to make sre the other systems are functioning propperly before throwing parts at it. Also, The MAF Calibrator only works at WOT (IIRC), so if these numbers are being given during normal cruise, there may be an underlying issue.

    Really maf only has control at WOT, well then I could have a crap filled cat or a bad o2... maf claibrator, nvr mind...

    The MAF Calibrator changes A/F signal under WOT. When the engine is under WOT conditions, or cold (Open loop), A/F is controled by the MAF sensor. When warmed up, and under normal cruise conditions (closed loop) , the A/F ratio is dictated by the MAF, AND the O2 sensors, with favortisim given to the O2 sensors for better ecconomy. If these readings you are getting are under normal cruise operation, then you need to check the O2 sensors.
