    It's all about the lawsuit. The city blocked the sale of the team to Balsillie.

    "Balsillie offered $242 million to buy the team and move them to Hamilton, Ontario. He also offered Glendale $50 million to drop its legal opposition to the unsuccessful move."

    The team is only valued at ~150 mill, so he also offered to overpay by nearly 100mil.

    The league did block it, but the city didn't stand down from their law suit. Whoever buys the team will have to have the support of the city or they won't be going anywhere soon.

    Goldwater iss protecting the taxpayer. There are not a lot of hockey fans phoenix. Therefor goldwater is protecting a lot of people. As the Forbes article gets into, the 25 million the city is paying the NHL to manage the team is an inflated number. That money is actually to cover the financial losses of the team. It seems non-sensical to me to think that the city wants to keep a team that is taking them towards bankruptcy...
