two bothersome questions about these news photos:

If this unidentified meal recipient is too poor to buy his own food, how does he afford a cellphone?

And if he is homeless, where do they send the cellphone bills?

none except for crappy hub caps and floor mats.
    Several possible scenarios:

A: He did have a job, but lost it like a lot of people and is now broke. The phone was bought before he lost the job.

B: He lost his home to foreclosure since anyone that could breathe got loans recently.

C: Why does it matter? If he's too poor to have a cell phone, then I assume he's also too poor to own shoes? What's the point?

    Here's your answer

Obviously I have my convictions with that...in no way is a cell phone a necessity. Pay phones are everywhere and affordable enough. Even a cell phone without any paid service can call 911 in an emergency.

This has got to be one of the dumber topics today. So what? the guy has a cell phone. Should he be punished for having it and accepting food handouts? Guess we'd better stop having toys for tots then since those homeless kids don't deserve free toys then.

Your toys for tots analogy is ridiculous...children cannot work and are never expected to.

Second...cell phones are still mostly a luxury and this guy has a nicer phone than I do. I wouldn't even care that much if it was a basic cell phone, but it looks like a blackberry.

The whole point of this event was to rally support and empathy for homeless people. He might as well been updating his twitter on a laptop in the picture.

*edit* If you want to liken it to something...it's like the AIG executives taking lavish trips after the government bailing them out. Similar train of thought.

The world doesn't run on morals. Perfect example is today's banking system. I will also say that there are numerous churches in my area that provide 3 meals a day, no questions asked of whether you're homeless or not.

So I think where this thread was trying to go was: " Homeless man has cell phone thus should not get free food." I can almost guarantee that half the people objecting to this likely describe themselves as " in a praying Christian family". Ironic isn't it?

Well every meal that this guy eats because he's paying his cell phone bill is a meal that cannot go to a family that really is starving and isn't wasting money on a cell phone. It'd be the same as me going to a homeless shelter to save a few bucks so I can buy stuff for my truck.

Probably very true. If somehow people found out someone famous ( like the President's wife) were somewhere dishing out food, they'd probably be like: " Holy crap! I've gotta take a picture!"
