How the hell do you use this spring compressor???!!!

Rented a powerbuilt from advance... The threaded rod runs through the center of the spring... But there is a shock in the spring. So wtf?

 

Unfortunately, you rented the wrong spring compressor...
This is the one you should've rented:


^^THese ones grab each side of the spring from the outside...
Take your time when using these... as they can be pretty dangerous if used incorrectly...
Tighten one side a few times, then tighten the other....Keep doing this until the spring is compressed enough so there is no more resistance on the assembly...once there is no more resistance, you can then start working on it..

 

They didnt tell me there was a diff. Type... Damnit!

 

Be careful when doing this yourself. I would have some one who has experience w/ me to compress the springs.

 

X2 if you dont know what your doin, Dont mess with it. Take it to someone who know what there doin.

 

Honestly you would better off using a pneumatic or hydraulic press. The springs on the Tacomas are pretty stiff. Those rods on a manual spring compressor are gonna bow like a motherf*cker.

TAKE IT SOMEWHERE. Those springs are freaking scary. I think I paid a shop to compress and reassemble my new coil for like $35. Money well spent considering that if a spring compressor fails it could kill you.

Try harbor freight and buy one of these! $89 if I remember correctly?

 

When I was 16 I compressed my own springs on a Jeep Cherokee , it was a pain in the ass and as I found out after I was done very dangerous!.. but it wasn't complicated and only took me about 2hrs. Get your deposit back and put it towards a shop doing it for you... it shouldn't take more than an hour. If you already have bunch of stuff disassmbled and are feeling brave go for it, but wear safety gear and be very paranoid around a compressed spring. Also, tell the PepBoys dude, or whoever, what your applicatuon is so they dont give you one rated for VW Bug springs or something... if there is a difference.

 

If you end up with these, get two sets. It will go much easier.

That looks scary as hell! I would take it to a shop. You think you are saving until you have a spring break loose and smash your face in. Hospital bills are far more expensive.

 

Where are you located, I'd let you use mine if you were close, or just do it for you.

well whats there to know? i see alot of people saying if you dont know what you are doing dont do it.

i took mine to firestone to have them done and they f'd it up. first they had the adjustable piece upside down so the spring was all coc.k eyed on the shock and looked like it was going to bust. then they put them on and they were not alligned right to go back in. i ended up getting that tool and fixed it myself.

it seems if you just go slow and tighten each side slowly, and evenly you shouldnt have any problems.

Took them to a shop... Well worth the $40

 

I don't think they carry this one any more.
