So long as you go with a brand name you'll be fine. I would stay away from Iomega...

WD & Seagate are both good companies. Keep in mind tho, for external drives - the slowness is most likely related to that little USB plug, not the HDD itself. Unless your computer supports USB3.0, there's not a whole lot of options for a faster external drive.

If you truly want a solid backup solution, off-site is always the best. Check out crashplan.com...

I've had a 1TB Western Digital external hard drive for a couple years, haven't had any issues with it.

Out of what you've listed I would go with Seagate.

Mine is a freeagent as well. had it for about 3 year and its about 85% full now.

 you would know better than me.

    Thanks Tom.

I need it to be accessible - I add and edit photos quick often so I don't think off-site is the best. And I know the usb connection is a big part of the lag I'm seeing...and i'm running out of ports! I figure I may make my seagate more of my long term, save it and ignore it storage and use the new one for all of my active files.

    passport?
    I have one now...

Not too bad, they had me on the floor from the time I walked in the door. The people there are all younger than me and are calling me "Gramps". The job is a bit more physical than I thought it was going to be. We'll see how it goes, I'll give it a fair shot.

They have a pretty decent operation, but management is not people oriented, there is a big turnover there. I'll give it a while, I am not starving, so if I really don't like it, I can resign.
