i need help from you guys ASAP please!!! (esp. carpenters)

well, the guy showed up yesterday morning. i asked him about raising the floor to accomodate the insulation, and he agreed with me. so he went back to the office to get some 2x4's to build the floor up. he comes back to the house and says to me "hey, my boss wants to talk to you" (keep in mind, the boss is the one who originally came out to quote the job) well, ol boss tells me he didnt consider about the insulation issue and wants 40% more in money!!!! i told him you are crazy as hell! its not my fault you underbid the job, hell, you have been in business for 20 years and have an A+ rating with the BBB and this is your answer to me?!?!?! I said "NO THANKS, PAL !!!!!

At least they didn't just move the insulation and sheet the bottom chord

 

dont you agree that was a sh*tty way of doing business? i think the 2x4's might have cost him $50 at most. i would have paid the $50 if he did the labor

 

Sounds like the job changed after he bid it , too bad this wasn't worked out ahead of time .

Nailing ledgers to the sides of the trusses and cutting the plywood to fit in between is a lot more work the dropping full sheets on the bottom chord and nailing them down

 

Yeah, I'm thinking boss man was hoping you were the one not considering the insulation.

Unfortunately some places will just bid exactly what someone asks for without taking anything else into account. Like OZ said the job just changed when you asked for something else.

The labor is the expensive part, so there's no incentive to the contractor to do it that way.

 

i never asked for anything else. i assumed he knew what to do . his sub contractor carpenter guy even told me he would have to do that.

 

Lack of discussion about the exact scope of work is the main issue here I would suggest

 

I have worked in the roof truss industry for the past 14 years and I have seen it all. To sum up what you probably already know there is probably not an extra dead load added to the bottom chord to accomodate storage. Standard loading varies but on the bottom chord 10 pounds per square foot is really common. My questions I have for you are:

Do the trusses free span from exterior wall to exterior wall? Are there any interior walls perpendicular to the truss bottom chords?

What are the span of the trusses?

What grade and size of lumber for top chord and bottom chord?

What is the truss web pattern? Do the webs form a "W"?

Is there sheetrock on the ceiling or the bottom of the bottom chord?
