8" sub box question

Who is using this sub in sealed or free air.
Which do you get better sound out of?

 

first off you dont get any bass with a driver mounted in free air, second if your going to run an 8 it has so little cone area that unless your going to port it somehow its going to play upper bass notes and because of the lack of displacement not very loud.
now if you plan to run several like 3 or 4 then you might be onto somthing. however this looks like a really new design i couldnt say how it will sound in a ported or sealed application.
if you want my opinion i would say get a inexpensive JL sub and port it. i run a single 10 ported and its plenty loud.

 

i already installed it free air
and it fills nicely but i want a little more bang can i get that outta a sealed?

yes i definitly agree that if you installed that sub into anything that resembles a box it would sound 100% better!

 

Free air, no. Infinite baffles can work in a pinch. In your case, however, I think that sealed enclosure would be a much more worth while endeavor. Based on the picture, I'd say you are at least capable of cutting wood, if not good box design. I would recommend ditching the plywood for a more dense material, such as MDF (best product in most applications and inexpensive to boot). I don't know the T/S parameters of that sub, nor do I feel like looking them up... but the spec sheet ought to tell you the best enclosure size. Go with that (and maybe have Marv build it for you). It will no doubt be an improvement in bass response and clarity of sound over the free air application you have it in now.

 

I went with the BC Ply because MDF doesn't come in 1/2" and I was trying to save as much room as possible.
The issue is space... I really wanna keep everything behind the back seat
And as you can see theirs alotta stuff... I suppose I will begin working on a new box design for a sealed enclosure...

ya... but I have 4 crossovers... and a 3xs sound processor... space is an issue...

 

MDF does come in 1/2", but maybe not at your local lowe-depot-hardare place.

so I was like. Whats the smoothest plywoodo yall got (i didn't want abnormal surfaces inside (ie knot holes)

 

BTW, your setup does look well thought out and pretty sweet.

 

considering the lack of space how about you put the xovers in the doors near the speakers, stuff the processor under a seat and get a smaller 5 channel amp?
now you got tons of room! lol

I got a guy that does fiberglass work thats gonna blend it into the side panels and back window lip
and im also wanting to mount perferated steel over the amps/x-overs/wiring with some LED accents underneath
but I gotta make sure im happy with the performance before I go that far
(the real expensive parts of the box)

 

hmm possibility on the doors... I could cram 2 of the x overs in the back doors... if theyd fit... have you tried this?

i always put the xovers in the doors, you run a lot less wire also, i also use the factory wire, no reason to run wire thats already there!
there should be plenty of room in the rear doors to mount them, worst case mount them on the inside of the metal, just drill a couple holes while holding the xover on the front side as a guide and then with a stubby screwdriver screw them in from behind, or hell slap a peice of double side tape/foam to the back of the xover and slap that lil basterd on the inside of the door. just wrap some duct tape over it in case it gets wet.
i mounted mine in the front doors just below where the arm rest is, there is a huge pocket behind the panel.

the processor could fit easily on 1 side and the amp situation, many you could save enough room to mount a 12 if you went with a small 5 channel amp like the alpine PDX-5 i got, its about the size of a peice of notebook paper.

 

ok id I get rid of the x overs back their then thats only about 3"x14" space

 

another suggestion, why do you have all thoes fuse holders back there? thoes are high current fuse holders, you only need to run 1 peice of 4 ga wire from the battery. if you have to use a distro block for 2 amps run 8 ga from a 2 way distro in the rear. please dont tell me thoes are the only fuses you used! please tell me you used one near the battery under the hood.
also why all the wire and crap? it looks like you want to show off the install, if thats the case then make it clean, half the room wasted in that area is with all the wire and junk. you could easily get rid of the distro blocks, mount them behind a panel somewhere or down on the floor someplace.. it looks like you got everything mounted to a board, drill a couple holes in it and feed all the wires behind the panel so they dont show. youll get a lot more room by cleaning up the rats nest of wire. did you see my install? it doesnt take hardly any time to hide everything. too bad you dont live closer to colorado, i would do an install for you that would make your head spin!

I would have had to runnem all behind that reinforcement bar on the back wall and that woulda been such a pain. so I just wanted to get it plugged in cause i been working 6 days a week and sunday is my day with my daughter pretty much
I have most of the holes drilled already to run wires behind the amp rack and i wanted to keep the fuses in the back cause 1 - 4 gauge wire is alot cheaper than 2 - 8 gauge wires

i asked for 2 weeks for specs on boxes people had made and no one gave me anything so i went after it myself and this was my first attempt
and no i haven't seen your install
