I like him as an actor a lot. Nothing I've seen him do thus far makes me think he's a good fit for Roland at all.

My first pick would be Daniel Day Lewis (if he'd play the part - he's notoriously picky). Josh Brolin would make a solid #2 pick.

Mickey Rourke plays the Crimson King.

For me, I'd rather not see a movie or mini-series version. I like how I imagine Mid-World to be in my own mind.

And that's not a bad answer either. If they do commit it to film in some form I'd hope they'd do it right.

If they opt not to, that's just fine by me.

    Yeah.
I'm not a big fan of mini-series adaptations of King's stuff, but most of those are older. They seem to do a better job these days, but it doesn't seem right for this story. I am with Homer, I think I would be disappointed with how I envisioned stuff and how it was portrayed in the movie. Peter Jackson did a good job with Lord of the Rings, but this one is quite different.

I'm going on a beach vacation soon, and I plan to get these all loaded on a Kindle and see how far I can get.

IMHO, best to leave this one alone, it's a long yarn that seems more intended to spark imagination than visually entertain. My 2 cents anyway.

Re: OP's dislike for Wizard and Glass: I find that odd. I would argue the 4th book is the strongest in the series. It does the most to define who Roland was, why, and what happened to his world before the others were drawn.

It certainly doesn't read like a romance novel, and King does a great job of capturing just how mind addling teenage infatuation and lust is. Do you think Roland in his adult incarnation would've missed the conspiracy unfolding around him? This was the one time since he became a gunslinger that he let tunnel vision take over. It bit him arguably as hard as anything ever could, and it explains the cold calculus of his personality every day since. Even during the drawing he knew he would sacrifice his companions if he had to. Is it not obvious he insulates that last echelon of connection to others because it was the only vulnerability that ever made him pay dearly?

    I hear ya' very well.

Romance novel was wrong, Romantic Aura is what I should have said. Roland himself is a Romantic.

I don't believe Roland was as blind as you convey in Meijs, yes Susan was smoke in the brain, but most of the story verged on Roland's and Eldred's game of real life castles and who would come around their hillock first. Even with Susan, Roland was still able to spot signs of the conspiricy with such as the count of the horses and finding the oxen.

To me at least, Roland has seemed more vulnerable in several other situations than he was in Meijs. And all would have had to been post-Meijs. The Little Sisters of Eluria comes quickly to mind as Roland is ambushed from behind, beaten and pretty much dead, with the muties or the Sisters, if not for his Sigul and Sister Jenna. Roland was vunerable at Jericho Hill, whatever happened there. King even mentioned Roland was a bit vunerable/self questioning in TWTTK when having laid a plan to catch the skin-man.

It all wraps arounds itself though. The biggest tragedy out of Meijs was Rhea and the glass ball which eventually lead to Roland turning the gun on Gabrielle. Wouldn't, in a nutshell, getting hoodwinked by a on old witch into killing your mother make you colder than what happened with Susan?

It's always seemed that between the two deaths, Susuan's and Gabrielle's, Gabrielle's had a much bigger impact on Roland that Susan. TWTTK starts off with how much guilt Roland feels over his mothers death, yet a year later, his fathers advice and his mothers ending letter and question and his answer.

I get the angst and the lust of being a teenager, but all in all, what does that have to do with reaching and Rolands quest for the tower?

On another topic that always kind of bugged me a little bit...In VI, it's very clear that Jake takes the Ruger with him when he and Pere go to NY. One my favorite scenes is Jake beating on the hood of the car, pointing the gun at the driver. Yet, when Pere and Jake take the Wizards Glass and store it in the lockers in the subway, there is mention of a metal detector. King even spoke about the Oriza's and how they passed through the metal detector...but what about that gun?

And I'll add this: I believe it's time for me to re-read the whole series again it's been many years... I've always felt that the last book was rushed and that SK was in a hurry to get Roland to the Tower. But enough for now, I gotta go to bed!

I feel like they will butcher the books so badly, that it will be laughable. Most of Kings books-turned-movies are. Especially a series of books that cover thousands of pages of details.

Also agree on the Roland part. He may do a good job in the role, we shall see, but Detta calling him "cracker" and "white boy" all the time would have to be skipped over in the movie. Also not sure on the man in black. I expected him to be older, more evil.

I was an avid Dark Tower fan until the end of the last book. It was crap. I was so dissapointed with it I actually chucked the book across the room. I wish I had stopped reading before Roland went into the tower, as SK himself suggested in the book.

Yup, me too -- and I think it was well-played. I would have been disappointed if it DIDN'T end that way.
