After a brief absence I am getting back into Tacomas!

found a 2005 TRD Sport not to far from me for a good deal ($13k) with 102k miles.

It has some rust on the underside and wanted some opinions on it from you folks. Engine mounts look solid, does not appear to have TSB springs on it. Everything else seemed to check out. The paint wasnt the greatest but I think it will clean up pretty good. Has a clean car fax, but he doesnt have any service records.

Fly to Arizona and buy a truck. I would not buy a truck with that much frame rust. Imagine what it will look like in 3-4 years.

Wow - on the west coast you would run from that much rust and never look back. I have restored several classic cars and rust is the most damaging and costly problem to fix. What you can see is usually less than half the problem you can't see. I know, I'm out here with no perspective on what's normal for east coast, but I would look at some other trucks first to be sure I wanted it.

Up here in Canada, we take care of our frames, every fall I take my vehicles to get oil sprayed. This is where I go.

    http://www.oilgard.com/

My frame looks like it just came out off the frame paint line, and it's 4 years old.

I worked with a guy that changed his oil, thinned it out a bit, and sprayed the bottom of his van with it.

So .... Yay or Nay ?

it is cheap ... $13k but also reflects that with the rust

i just think it would be hard to find another TRD sport for that kind of money ...

If its cheap, yes, but like I said oil spray it, stops the rust. If no one does it in your area, you can buy the spray head and a 5 gallon pail will last 5 years.

I say keep looking . Look at your lca adjustment cam . If you ever need to get a alignment . They won't be able to align it . Then your looking at new hardware and bushings . Or new lcas . That's crazy rust for a 05 .

Yeah it is going to be hard to find one in New England unless it was meticulously taken care of & then the price will reflect the care.
My 06 was rusty but damn that doesn't look like it ever saw a power wash.
Mine is floating around Mass somewhere...I think the dealer sold it for 19k.
    x2 on the oil coating.
Good luck with your purchase & hope you find a good deal! :)

None yet but soon all black.
If I was you, I would not get it. Thats way to much rust from a truck. Stay away from it and look for something different. If you need to fix it, its gonna be a bitch to get all those rusted bolts off. Stay away,

Wow, the amount of rust makes me feel okay about the small amount that has popped up on my 06 lately.

Seems like a fair price for a TRD Sport with 100k. I bet you will be hard pressed to find a northern truck that doesnt have some rust on the under side. Id be more concerned about no service records than having some rust.

Most on here are from the south and cali or other regions without rust issues. They all scream in fear when the see rust.

I am from chicagoland and it turns with after the first snow until winter is over and we have a bunch of rains to wash all the extra salt away that coats the streets.

In my eyes that is surface rust. I have an 06 tacoma that lived its life in wisconsin and Illinois, it is worse than yours. I bought it used and plan to tackle the rust this summer.

The frame is in no way weak at this point but should be de-scaled and treated with a coating to prevent it from further rust.

I asked toyota what they would do since they used such a poor paint and then told me to get lost.

My other trucks were older and look way better than this tacoma in terms of rust.

Do not fear in buying it. Most on here will tell you to run though.
