These types of people are already zombies. Imagine in a grid down situation say from a solar storm that knocks the power out for a few weeks, months, whatever, and these people haven't eaten in 3 or 4 days. There will be many of them.

Many people who have not prepared for any type of disaster and only have about a days worth of food and water at their place. There is no power and therefore no way for the trucks to get food to the stores. Normally sane people will be completely changed and extremely desperate.

Zombies!

 

If wouldn't take a solar storm. I noticed it a couple of years ago. There was a storm on I-40 near Albuquerque, the Interstate closed down for a day or two, and the stores here started to run out of stuff. What got me prepping was when I found out that the stores don't keep more than 4-5 days of inventory on hand at any one time. They don't keep a lot in the back, and if the trucks stop coming from back east, the shelves get empty. If you remember the hurricane that hit the Philippines a few years ago, the Pinoys bought every bag of rice in this valley above 5 lbs. Every Sam's club, Costco, and grocery store was out of the big bags, and didn't have many of the smaller ones. They had all been bought and sent to the P.I. I decided then that the best thing I could do was to get all the supplies I could find, and store them in case this happened again. When people get hungry, all the rules go out the window. Most people who live here (excluding the Mormons) plan for tomorrow, maybe the day after, and that's it. I refer to it as an "American Idol" mentality.

I'm reading this too right now. I usually can stretch a book over a couple of months because I only really have time to read at night in bed and then I get tired quick. I've gotten so into this book, I started it 5 days ago, and I'm about 2/3 of the way through. It is both intriguing and depressing. So many things you don't think about and that we take for granted in our daily living.

I bough it for $600 and it was a rusted junk, took me years to build it.
First trip out got hydrolock, then had to rebuild the engine and snorkel(made from exhaust pipe)

 

after you read that you should check out "lights out". Its along the same lines. then after that read "day by day armageddon", an amazing zombie survival book. Its a 3 part book though.
then after that read "wool". its based in the future after a nuclear war and everyone lives in an underground silo. I think its a 5 part series but you can get it on kindle for like 5 bucks for all of it and it will read like one book.

 

He has a couple of fiction books, and a really good non-fiction. Has a green cover, can't remember the name, and don't have time to go outside and look. Also look into his website, survivalblog.com Huge amount of information there. Apologize if this has been posted before, I am running out the door for work, and don't have time to check.

 

Why are all zombie survival scenarios based around "heading north into the mountains"...

If all hell breaks loose, I'm heading to a remote beach in the Caribbean, building a raft using Bear Grylls techniques I've watched so many times, and finding some island to live on with an infinite supply of coconuts and exotic seafood.

I'm new to the forum and haven't read this whole thread, don't know if this has been suggested, but water is probably one of the most essential commodities - we can only live for 2-3 days without it. Portable charcoal water filters for backpacking weigh less than a pound and are about the size of a soda can and will last hundreds of gallons. You can pick one up at a sporting goods store like REI for about $80. Beats carrying bulky gallon jugs which will only last you a few days. Also it never hurts to have a bottle of iodine tablets for emergencies.

 

Thanks! I'll check them out. I'm reading a lot more these days since it's so easy to get books instantly on my iPad (Kindle app), plus it's almost summer time which means far less shows on (that I like) and less sports (also that I like).

 

Where I live, there are lots of water sources. I'm surrounded by lakes and canals. Plus I'm near the coast so we get a fair share of rain. Would need to rig up ways to capture water during rain. As long as you have a way to start a fire and purify the water. Food would be the biggest issue, and you can only stock up on so much canned food and other non perishables. I don't really have enough yard for a substantial enough garden, decent size maybe. Also, wildlife would dry up fast in an area like mine. More people than what could be sustained.

It's scary to think about long term power outages. I got a small (very small) taste when Hurricane Ike hit, we lost power for 12 days. Still had water (heated even since my water heaters are gas). We did a lot of grilling, had a generator to power a small window unit to at least cool down the master bedroom at night, and we all slept in there.

I need to start stocking back up on my hurricane season supplies.

Having several means of capturing, storing and purifying water should be on everyone's short list. Small backpack water filters are great but they need to be cleanable and rebuildable. Preferably your going to get one that will filter down to 2 microns or less. The smaller size will help with bacteria that may be present in the water. Your also going to want to use a prefilter so your internal filter stays working longer. The only downside to the smaller filters is the time it takes to filter larger amounts of water such as filling a five gallon container. Carry extra filters, iodine and a way to boil the water too.

In two years when I replace the roof on my house I am going to use concrete shingles. They last longer, provide some insulation and are more fire resistant compared to asfalt shingles. Another advantage is they don't contain the oils so they are safe for a rain collection system. Couple rain catchers with a slow sand filter and a final charcoal filter into storage containers you have a robust drinking water system that will last you your lifetime.
