I'll chime in on the Weed n Feed topic.

Liquid weed control is WAY more effective than granular weed control. You get much much better coverage of the weeds than with granular. Essentially the moisture has to be almost perfect for the granules to stick to the leaves of the weeds and is virtually completely ineffective on grass weeds and only marginally effective on broadleafs.

The most effective process is to use a granular fertilizer (cheaper too) and use a liquid weed control product. DO NOT APPLY liquid weed control products if the temperatures reach 85+ degrees during the day or you risk burning your turf which can completely kill it or take weeds to recover. Again READ THE LABEL.

It's better to use a granular fertilizer because most have a slow release coating that is better for extended feeding.

Go ask any professional lawn chemical applicator company. They don't use granular weed'n'feed products. They typically use the method I mentioned above, or they use a liquid fert w/ liquid weed control mixed in.\

For those that have warm season grasses such as bermuda or zoysia. Granular weed n feed is a complete waste of money because the weeds start germinating before the grass comes out of dormancy. While you are treating the weeds, you're giving the grass food while it's "asleep" and the "feed" part is completely wasted and most is washed away before the grass comes out of dormancy and begins to absorb the fertilizer. This leads to all of the legislation to ban fertilizers because of the excess runoff.

I think I'm going to try Macgyver's method of creating edging for a flower bed (use a shovel to dig down a little). Ill try and get before and after pics up. I went ahead and cut a line in the grass with my weedeater so I can get a good line.

    Nice looking lawns in here!
I would love to have a nice lawn. Problem is, we have two acres and I have a ridiculous weed problem! We have been in the house for 3 years come memorial day. The weeds keep getting worse and worse. Clover, Dandelions and tons of other weeds that I have no idea what they are called. When I cut the grass I bag it but this of course takes all dang day! I'll get some pics of the lawn this evening and post them up. We haven't had the cash to buy weed and feed yet due to our upcoming wedding but after, it's game on with all these damn weeds! Any tips and pointers would be greatly appreciated! Pics to come shortly of the area I'm dealing with.

I finished my "trench" last night. I sprayed all the grass on the inside with roundup so hopefully it will all be dead soon. Then I can clean it up, add a few plants, and spread the mulch

Here are some pics of my lawn I snapped yesterday. I'm not even sure exactly what kind of grass I'm suppose to have. I think I have a little of everything.

How deep did you go with the trench ZR?

I just picked up some new tools - Stihl Kombi.

I got the KM90R head (same motor on the FS90 trimmers, and all the other 90 series stuff), along with the trimmer, edger, cultivator, and pole saw attachments.

I also got a Husqvarna 435 chainsaw a few weeks ago ($143 shipped!! - refurb). Had a huge oak in the back yard die, so my FIL came over with his lift, and we topped it, limbed it (with a rope to keep it from falling on the fence or in the neighbors yard), and then fell it into the back yard. I had my chain saw, my dads Husqvarna, and the FIL brought out a couple Echo's.

Also lost a couple peach tree's, and a pear tree in the drought last summer that need to come down soon as well.

I am just getting started on trying to get rid of the weeds in the front yard. I have decided to do the weed elimination first, and am using some liquid spray for broad leaf weeds, my biggest problem. It has worked well, but I do have some slightly bare spots in the yard now. We are up into the 90*s, so I will wait until fall -> spring to do some reseeding to get some grass back in there.

We have 2 dogs that occupy the back yard during the day(sometimes 3 when a friend drops hers off), so the weeds are pretty bad, but I am hesitant to use chemicals back there. (Also have the "dog paths" around the fence, and across a part of the yard.) Any suggestions on weed control and grass growth for back there?

Ok, should I just use a regular sprayer and walk the lawn as if I were cutting grass spraying it in a back and forth motion? I really need a larger sprayer but I don't have one so I'll have to work with what I got. I have a spreader for the dry but I've read in this thread that liquid works better.
    Thanks!

I use the Weed Be Gone in the sprayer bottle that you just hook up to your hose. Works well

I went probably 2 1/2" to 3" deep straight down on the grass side and on the other side it is at an angle and slopes towards the "flower bed" side.

My back yard was solid weeds over the winter. I used round up in Feb on the entire thing and killed everything green. Now the only thing back there is Bermuda and some nut grass. It looks like the nut grass is dying now (crosses fingers).

I would have thought that would have killed the grass too, even though it is dormant. I may have to try that over winter. I could roundup in Jan, then seed in late Feb... Hmmm

Nut grass is fucking evil. I found a great product called Sedge Hammer that will selectively kill it.
