m101A(x) Trailer Build

Well I decided to buy an m101A trailer for a few reasons.

1. I wanted a project,
2. I will be moving in a few months and rather spending $300-$400 on a uhaul and not have anything to show for (moving back to South Texas a 1000 mile round way trip, I plan to make 2 trips) I decided to buy a trailer instead.

Spent $380 on the trailer, found in Royce City. Frame is in excellent condition, very light rust on body. Trailer sat for about 10 years and was pulled behind a Bronco and was used for off-road functions.

My plans, repaint and install a new highway friendly axle/tires and fix the bows.

I have started on the cosmetic stuff, grinding all the old paint and light rust off using my Harbor Freight 4.5 inch ($10) grinder with some abrasion wheels ($5 a pop). This setup has by far been worth the money. I have gone through 5 wheels and burned out the grinder. Will get a new one today to finish up.

I have used up 4 cans of primer. All 4 sides have been wheeled and painted in primer.

I am going with a Tan color (rattle can) and plan to use about 6 cans of Krylon @ 3.67 a can.

So far I have spent $30 on painting supplies and another $25 on the abrasion wheels.

I also picked up 2 BFG All-Terrian 17 inch tires was 50% thread for $80 this weekend.

"I need 2 17 inch tires!" so if you want to help me out....hook me up.

I still need to order a Dexter 3 inch axle (62/63 inch 43.25 SC). Price is $200 local.

I'll be in around $800-$900 when this project is all done. On to the pics.

I missed a primo m101 with the bows and cover in OK for $250. That thing was gone within an hour of posting.

Anyways, yeah the price wasn't that bad. I just ordered the Dexter Axle with the following specs.

1. HF: 62 inches
2. SC: 43.25
3. 6x5.5
4. Straight Axle w/o Brakes

I have a pair of 1.5 inch lug centric spacers that I will be using so that will place the HF at 65 inch, might stick out about .5 inch on each side.

I still need a pair of 17 inch rims.....someone help me out. I found some in Weatherford for $200. I worked out a deal for this weekend for $125 for 2 and I throw in the old axle and rims and tires. For some reason, I don't think this might be that good of a deal since I have to drive out there and still dish out $125 for 2 rims............what do you guys think. Should I try to sale the axle and tires on CL for $100 and just buy all 4?

It's been painted, re-wired, new lights and I picked up some FJ 8 hole rims and BFG AT tires. Just waiting on the axle. Thinking of doing a DIY Roll on Bedliner while I wait for the axle. It' came out looking good.

This is an open offer to you "Kilo" if you ever need to get a bigger trailer. I will trade you your m416 straight up for my m101a. It's not complete yet but once it's done. It'll look real nice.

 

So I picked up 2 FJ Cruiser rims for the trailer a few days ago. I found one on CL for $25 and then found the other one on ebay for $100. I know huge price difference but I really like these rims. I priced them out at Toyota of Dallas and they are $300+ per rim....freaking nuts!

Anyways, I bought 2 17 inch BFG for $80 and 2 rims for $125 so that puts me at $205 for wheels.

Here is a picture of the wheels I'm talking about. I have one mounted on the BFG and get the other one today.

All I need now is the axle and the DIY Bedliner.

 

Dude, I have a 30gal compressor with a few air tools if I could help....

After doing some research and deciding that all I wanted to do was make the bed of the trailer functional and get all the damn rust out, I decided on Rust-Oleum Brand Bed-liner. I priced out a local guy who does excellent work for $325 (that was to expensive) and other brands. The cheapest price I found was at my local Wal-Mart. I paid $11.87 for the Roll on Kit and $43.00 for a Gallon of the Rust-Oleum Bed-liner. So I was in business for under $60.

I got a wild hair and started this project last night a 10:30pm. After prepping the trailer I laid down the first coat around 11:30 pm. At first I thought it was way to thin and tried applying thicker coats as I started to complete the trailer it started to come together real nice. I waited about an hour for it to dry and started the second coat at 1 am. Then disaster came, it started to pour. I was half way done on the second coat. I went outside this morning only to see it still wet and with a bunch of dirt from the tree branches. I gave it a good spray down with the water hose. Hopefully it doesn't hurt anything. Overall I'm very pleased with the outcome of the Bedliner. I still have 1/2 a gallon and will be applying another coat when it dries up.

I got a bunch of this stuff on my hands because I used up all my gloves while sanding. This stuff is really hard to take off.

Just got a call that the axle is in, I'll be picking it up on Monday and will probably work on it during the week. Still have to fix the bows. My weekend project.

 

Looks good! How thick was that stuff? it doesn't look that thick, is it textured?

 

Not very thick. I need to apply another coat and finish up the tailgate. I put the axle on and some tires and drove it around town. Overall I'm very happy with the build. It looks great.

 

I wouldn't mind having one of those sometime. It would be nice to just throw all my crap in a trailer sometimes.

 

The trailer made a 500 mile trip today from Irving to Edinburg. I hauled my leather couches to my in-laws and it did very good. That's because I didnt even install the shocks. I still need to cut off the axle/shock mount from the old axle and put it on the new axle. Got a bunch of thumbs up on the road. Going back tomorrow for another 500 mile trip. Tacoma pulled it just fine......but I did use up more gas! About $150 one way.

How's the trailer coming? All finished?

 

Oh yeah, this trailer was finished a while back. It looks good. Its at my moms house in the Valley. I used it to move some of my stuff. It did really great and pulls smooth and straight.

I also finished up my m416 type trailer. So yeah I have 2 trailers now.

 

you could have used paint epoxy they use it on airplanes to eat off old paint burn on skin eats the hell out of pain.
