Man sounds like you would have been better off in a double-cab SR5 4x4, and used the money you saved for all the extras you want to throw on.

    And welcome to TW.

I know, fortunately the few Gs were not a burden, my only "regret" getting a sport was the difference in TRD packages. I did not know until after buying the truck that I would be compelled to make changes to it, otherwise I might have gone with the SR5 :p

Thanks for the welcome, can already tell its a bad ass community here.. I'm fairly happy to leave the camaro forums behind...

I'm gonna make this my new sig because it comes up so often....

    8.4 with ARB > 8.0 OE EL

I even know someone who took out and trashed the 8.0 for a 8.4 with ARB RD129 cause they were tired of failures.

The 8.0 can be made simpler with mechanical actuation instead of electronic but not sure thats on the market yet.

the early years had horrible ring gears...

now it's just pure strength of the axle and the limited electronics (air pump) which leads me to this opinion

I have wheeled my e locked TRD pretty good for the last 88K, and have had no issues. Moab trips once or twice a year, lots of locked wheeling around idaho, wyoming, utah, montana. The more I use it the easier it has seemed to engage, but maybe that's because Im used to it more. So far not one issue with my 06, even the stock battery is still cranking:cool: I have gone up some pretty hairy shit with the stock locker, and accepted the fact that it might POP, but so far it has held up great.

I know people who wheel hard all the time and never had any issues with the e-locker. I know others who have.

Everyone has an opinion based on their personal experiences in life so everyone will have a different one.

I would of bought a offroad if I planned on wheeling the Tacoma like I do now. Would I have blown the rear by now...who knows?

Do I know the 8.4 housing is a physically stronger design then the 8.0 housing....yep.

Not saying I dont agree that the 8.4 is a TAD bit stronger than the 8, but I use this thing regularly for fun in all kinds of terrain my area has to offer. Where do you live? Been on a few fires in Penn and was hard pressed to find any wheeling in our Govt trucks besides mud.

My location is irrelevant to this discussion, but I have seen plenty of rears blow in mud. Mud is also one of the nastiest environments to wheel in regarding wear and tear on parts.

How many 8.4's with RD129 ARB's have you ever heard have blown up?
How many 8.0's with E-lockers have you ever heard blew up?

My first search came up with this and I have seen plenty like it for the electronic actuators as well. http://www.tacomaterritory.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35345&highlight=rear+axle+failure&page=2

Right on, your right that a lot of factory e locked diffs have blown. I tend to avoid the mud in my expensive pickup and I can see how spinning the shit out of the rear while locked could raise some issues. However, myself and others with the 8.0 diff here out west have abused the shit out of them and I have never personally heard of a failure....exept on TW. I just hear a lot of people talk shit about them, but I know of at least 10 owners that have never had issues. I know that I use mine quite a bit and have never had an issue. Sometimes you gotta take what someone says online with a huge grain of salt.

What is the "hill start assist" and "downhill assist" available in the "off road"? necessary?

Here's a copy of the flash from Whippers link. You can keep this on your computer. Just change the file extension from .pdf (had to change extension to beat the site upload limits) to .swf and open using your web browser.
