any other suggestions? my front yard seems to be covered in it and they laid sod in the back before we moved in and I have a feeling (judging by the potholes the mower keeps getting stuck in) that they didn't do any prep work, just laid right over the top of everything (including a few brick pieces left over from construction )

Napalm, but that is nonselective. There are two kinds of nutsedge in Cali, purple and yellow. Roundup works OK, on one, but not the other, can't remember without research. Of course, Roundup kills eveything else.

Mix it in a Hudson sprayer and go to town.

Actually, if it is in your lawn and you keep it mowed it isn't bad, but it is the invasive spreading into adjacent beds that is a nightmare. And it roots deep with spreading stolons and the "nuts" underground.

Nope, it will only kill what is green and currently growing. My neighbor accros the street does the same thing and each spring all he has is a nice green bermuda lawn.

 

Sedge Hammer will kill it.

For the warm season turf folks, Image will kill it. Don't use Image on cool season grasses (KBG, Fescue, Rye)

If you guys have a John Deere Landscapes near you, just go there and tell them you need something to kill sedge. I'm almost positive they carry sedge hammer. If not, they carry something similar. I buy all of my fert and chemicals from them. They are very helpful. Not to mention you'll be amazed when you see that the bag of Lesco brand fert you buy at Home Depot is double the price you'll pay at JDL. You won't be able to buy sedge hammer at Home Depot or Lowes.

One thing to keep in mind is sedge grasses typically grow in areas with poor drainage. Fix the drainage problem and your sedge will eventually die. As with most weeds, they thrive in poor soil conditions while turfgrass thrives in good soil conditions.

 

It was carried in nurseries for a while, then it was pulled off the shelves over some packaging or instruction issues, but I think it is available again. As posted above, it seems available on Amazon now.

I was wondering when you would show up. Now I am wondering when you will leave.

 

Ive used Sedge Hammer with success last year, but as macgruber stated, nut grass thrives in bad soil conditions. It has reappeared this year in the same area. I'll probably spray some soil activator to stimulate the microbes in the soil and add compsost.

 

It takes plenty of time and effort to grow a finely manicured lawn like mine.

Just because I aerate mine with MT's doesn't make me a bad person.

 

"grow" and "lawn" are completely unrelated to anything on your property. You are the incarnation of Agent Orange.

 

I have nice rose bushes and 200 yards of manicured beds full of goodies around my fence line.

I gave up on the lawn after hundreds if not thousands of dollars and many seasons worth of work. I use my back yard hard so nice grass was a waste of time. My front yard is OK, but I also don't have 10 trucks parked on it like my back.

 

I'm no expert, like macgyver, but I have good luck with the following regimen:
- Spring -> Aerate & Power Rake, Apply Vigoro Weed & Feed, Apply Revive Organic Soil Treatment
- Summer -> Apply Vigoro Lawn Fertilizer, Apply Ortho Weed-B-Gon as needed, Spot-treat with Revive Organic Soil Treatment
- Fall -> Aerate, Apply Vigoro Winterizer
- Winter -> Water as needed to prevent winter-kill

In the end, it's all about understanding your soil conditions and applying treatments appropriate to them.

Here is my front yard the back yard is a different story. I built the house about four years ago. I priced out sod but it was a little expensive, so I installed some irrigation and used a Lesco athletic turf grass blend with some help with a friend that used to work at a sod farm. I just keep up with the fertilizers and I over seed in the fall.

Looks good. I miss having a cool season lawn. The house I grew up in had a fescue/kbg/rye blend lawn and I loved it. When I was about 12-13 years old, my dad turned over the lawn responsibility to me and put me in charge of mowing, irrigation, aerating, and overseeding it. Unfortunately cool season grasses don't hold up too well in July & August here with the heat we get.

Looks like you have pretty sandy soil? I would probably top dress that backyard with some loam before you try overseeding it. The front looks great.
