Guys I need help. When I put my 886's in and put my hand like an inch away it immediately got hot. I put it into my housing and watched for awhile and I would say 30 seconds in it was smoking (the bulb) housing is fine the bulb heats up a ton. Does it matter that my truck is a first gen? Also I have 2001-2004 taillights on my '99 if that helps.

You could have got oils on the bulbs.

I think you are right sir. It kept cutting out, had burnt residue on it, when to autozone got a new bulb and all better. I left them sit outside the casings for like 2 minutes they didn't get too hot. Man im JACKED I might be able to see behind me for the first time since putting my topper on. Cheap mods are the SHIT :D

I just completed this mod. Instead of cutting the bulbs off, I rocked them back and forth in the housing until the wires broke off at the base of the terminals. I then bent the flat metal pieces back against themselves and inserted the 886s in the sockets. The fit was snug, with no fear of the bulbs falling out of the sockets. I cut the first bulb as described in this thread and found the bulb too loose to stay in the socket. The 886 bulb is too thick to fit into the socket as the original 936s did. However, carefully bending the leads until they broke free from the housing and then bending them back against themselves worked great. the difference in lighting is dazzling![IMG]

I may have found an even easier way to do this but haven't yet tested it. My bulbs finally showed up so I need to install them and test them out when I get a chance. I will report back my findings.

Yes and no. The bulbs I ordered arrived and one burnt out rather quickly. Contacted where I bought them from and they asked if I would like a replacement or a refund. Replied replacement and never heard from them. So I started contacting them to see what the hold up was and requested a refund several times and never heard back. I gave up, popped my stock bulbs back in and called it a day. Decided maybe the stock reverse lights were already bright enough. :D

    Gotcha! Thanks for the reply.

I'm thinking to use 894s, just a 37.5W version of the 886s, which are 50W. Just to play it safe, as I may wire a switch so I can turn them on independantly of reverse for work lights, which will naturally mean longer run times.

Thanks. Sorta on the fence, may still do the halogens for reverse and continue use my LED headlamp as a work light, since it lights up wherever I'm looking, and is easier. Knowing my hate for tailgaters, probably better to leave an extra switch out of the picture.:D

I ended up doing this tonight with the 894s, which is the 37.5W version of an 886, lumen rating roughly 3x the stock 921s. Nice and bright, and the lense doesn't even feel warm after a few minutes of on time. Going to do the same on the wifes corolla, I tried the bulbs in it before installing in the truck with good results there too.

Quick question. Do I dremel cut the bulb at A or B marked in this picture?? Or somewhere else?

    Thanks.
