Today, my OHV trail use sticker for MN arrived. This is in preparation for a trip later this month on the TWAT up to North Central Minnesota for some off-roading and camping.

Plus, I got beer. It's been a good night.

 

Installed my Rotopax mount.

 

That is awesome, but man those are some expensive tents. What are the advantages of using this as opposed to just pitching a regular tent? Obviously its more "out of the way" and you don't have to find a spot to put your tent, but are there any other functional advantages or is it just a very cool alternative?

 

There are two main advantages :

1. Up and away from ground bugs. Bigger flying ones of course are a problem, but less so. Also, critters. The dog sleeps better because the critters are all down below. Plus better breezes up there mean better ventilation.

1.a. Bears have to climb up, so you get an extra 3.7 seconds of terror before they eat you.

2. Flat sleeping surface - I've slept on the ground a gazillion times, and I have never managed to not sleep on some pebble or stick or deformity that annoys me all night.

And setup time is very short. About 3 minutes from truck off to miller time, if you don't screw around. Everyone wants to check it out. You'll be very popular at campgrounds. Maybe you hate this, I dunno.

Downsides :

- It helps to get the truck levelish, and that can be difficult.
- Suspension wobble takes some getting used to.
- ZOMG what if it falls over in the night, you might fall to your death.
- Packing up is sort of a pain - about the same as a regular tent - but it's all over your head so it's not as convenient.
- Camp is attached to the truck. Once the tent is out, you aren't going anywhere. (although, that is solvable problem).
- Cost.
- if you drink too much enough, that first step to pee at 4 am can be a doozy. Bring a jug.

It's a mixed bag, certainly. But I'm old and sleeping the ground sucks and cots suck and air mattresses suck and this is fairly awesome. Plus, I've always preferred tents to campers and this is sort of the best of both of them.

But they are a bit spendy, and not for everyone.

Great video. I love how you didn't just put it on your truck and ride around all day. It must have taken some serious time though to set up the camera, walk back to the truck, drive out of the picture and then walk back to get the camera. Nice job man.
