Painting black wheels

    So I've read the walkthroughs on painting the wheels but I'm wondering if I could just leave the primer on w/o doing the clear coat so I can keep that dark dull powdercoated look. I'm not after a glossy or shinny finish.

    How can I do this? I'm sure this has been done before but I can't find the answer after using the 'SEARCH' tab. I'm going to buy pro comp 1069 polished aluminum wheels w/ a 285 tire. I love the look of the wheel but want it in black w/o the knight black polished look. Thanks gents...

    ps. currently sitting in dealer having them put on my TSB + just installed 5100's haha.. nice.. service advisor just came up to talk to me and said, "i just had to tell the techs not to remove your 5100 shocks in the front since the tsb comes w/ all four shocks replaced." They were about to rip out my new shocks! lol... phew, close one...

    If you don't want the super shiny look you can use paint that is satin or matte without a clear coat at all. Check out my gallery for photos of a satin finish.

    I wouldn't leave them only primer'd cause I'm not sure how it will wear...but you could try it. Rattle cans are cheap and rattle canned rims are easy to fix.

    That looks pretty cool but they still look a bit shiny IMO... I think duplicolor has a sealer for the primer, I think i'll just call and ask them haha...

    true that, if I mess up who cares just paint it again that's the beauty

    Do you have to take the wheels off in order to paint, or can you just tape and spray with them mounted?

    I removed mine...Overspray and Wind drift worried me more than some extra work.
    I was able to clean the wheels really well and get good coats of paint on them.

    If you want to tape off go ahead. Be careful of the braking system.

    That is the satin (semi gloss) paint....You can go for a matte topcoat.

    ah it's the semi gloss that's why, still looks cool on your truck with the red paint.

    matte topcoat.. hmm that would probably be what i'm after

    Yeah definately go matte finish, i used that for my emblems i dont like that glossy look.

    Thanks man...I did everything in the satin paint...that's the wonderful part about it. Your truck...make it the way you like it!!

    I know that Duplicolor makes a matte black regular paint. I liked the results from their paint (used several different types).

    i'm painting mine over the summer, and was thinking about the same thing. only difference is that i was thinking about doing a gunmetal grey color like on the trd fj cruiser wheels.

    for those of you who have already painted yours, did you paint the inside (back) of the weels as well, or just the front?

    riight on. So basically I'm gonna take off the wheel, clean the hell out of it, sand it (what grain of paper again?) then spray w/ primer, then primer sealer then 2-3 coats of matte black paint. Is there a sealer for the paint?

    eh, I'll just go look up the walkthrough again...

    Yes I did...I didn't pay AS careful attention to the backs tho. Got a decent coat on there and called it good enuf.

    800-1200 grit...I didn't use primer sealer....Nor did I use a paint sealant or clear coat.
