Which Taco to choose? Offroad, Sport, 4x2, 4x4???

    And I've pulled small boats onto slippery ramps I wouldn't try with anything less than a 4x4. Also pulled such boats to backwoods rivers and lakes where 4x4 is clearly handy, especially where paved ramps don't even exist.

    If used properly, a locker is quite useful in snow or rain. As the manual suggests, a locker isn't used to drive normally, since, as you say, one might spin out. Instead, it's intended to help get you unstuck, which is obviously possible in such conditions.

    In the end, 4x4 becomes increasingly more useful the more one deviates from dry paved roads. Only the potential owner can reliably determine how often that might be for him or her.

    Weathertech front floor liners, window vent visors. Custom bedside decals. OEM bed mat, tonneau covrew. Added D rings to bed.
    Since I am not in a rush this time, the truck is paid for, My next truck will be a sport 4x4. We don't get alot of snow, but enough that 4x4 would be nice. I would rather have the sport because I don't really offroad at all, so I would rather have the LSD rear end VS the locking diff.

    I didn't really off-road either, until after I got my first 4x4. Now it's rather normal, without much throught - though I have given it more thought recently (buying more off-road gear, etc) since my off-road environment has recently changed quite a bit (moved to a new area). Today, without 4x4, I'd probably get into trouble fairly quickly, driving into areas I really shouldn't without that additional capability.

    I have a 2x4 trd offroad dcsb and love it, wish i had the fourwheel drive bc in alabama and georgia i do a lot of offroading but i think the 2x4 trd offroad will be perfect for you bc every truck comes stock with limited slip then the trd offroad package allows you to lock in both wheels which does wonders and that should be plenty to pull your boat up the launch

    For 95% (or more) paved road driving - is the offroad noticeably rougher riding than the sport?
    How much (light duty) off road ability does the sport give up to the off road?

    Not even sure if I'm going 4x4 or not yet, so for sake of argument, call both of them Prerunners.

    If your looking to do suspension upgrades for off road use in the future, I would just buy the base model 4wd. Really the TRD packages aren't even worth it. Your paying THOUSANDS more for okay shocks and a couple cool decals. It just doesn't make sense IMO, but good luck man. Hope you find a killer!

    Yes it is a bit rougher.. I went from an 07 TRD OR PreRunner to a 4X4 Sport. Ive only driven dirt roads so far but the OR feels better suited for it, while the Sport feels soft. Where I park sometimes I have to drive up a curb and the Sport "bottom out" in front more easily than the OR b/c the difference in front springs. Check tire pressure if it feels too rough on test drive.

    Just two items you didn't know or fotgot to mention is that the Off Road TRD has (that ARE valuabale off road) are the rear locking differential and the A-TRAC all 4 wheel, ultra traction control.

    Perhaps your comments are related to the Sport TRD (which is a 'looks' package)?

    Not much on the 07 yet. 18 is gone, but was a greata truck. TRD Pro grill, Gator FX3, Homelink mirror, Black out badges & exhaust tip, Remote start. Future TRD exhaust, skid plate.
    I compromised when I got my 98 Tacoma and didn't get exactly what I wanted. When I got my 07, i made the dealer find Exactly what I wanted and I LOVED the all white treatment on the Sports and the hood scoop.

    I got 4x4 because on the few occasions we get snow where I live, I would be pissed if I didn't have 4x4 in a truck.

    Lot's of people love the TRD OR, but I have no idea why a locking diff is important and I don't plan on driving mine over rocks anyway, but I bet it is fun.

    Actually, between the basic v TRD 4x4 models, the difference is the shocks and decals you mention, plus rear locker, tow hook, better seats, engine skid plate, alloy wheels, hill start assist, active traction control, fog lamps, backup camera, power outside mirrors, sliding rear window, cruise control, steering wheel audio controls, and ac power outlet. There's probably several more items, but that's all that immmediately came to mind.

    You're right about the diff-lock and all David. Don't get me wrong I love the TRD-ORs, but for the money you could do it all yourself for cheaper than what the package runs. Just not worth it IMO. But if you don't wanna go thru the trouble, they're a great truck to have :cheers:

    Isn't mudding off-roading ?

    I'll share my theory on what I bought and why. Mine is a SWB DCSB TRD Sport 4x4. I've loved the color since I saw it,and i got the Sport for a few reasons. I prefer color matched bumpers,handles,accent parts,and will admit I like the look of the scoop.I liked the interior treatment better in the sport.I wanted the V6 and the 6spd. Prefer a standard over an auto in a truck,and I had a regular cab Dakota with a 4 cylinder. Decent little truck,but no power. I wanted the 4x4 because of where I live and the winter weather we get ( lake effect snow sucks at times ).I don't offroad much,but I'd like to start getting out away from civilization more.If I decide to get more involved in off-roading I can add what the Sport lacks.

    And on a lighter note...is the 4x4 really necessary to pull a boat out ? For the OP it sounds to me like the 4x4 is a bit unnecessary...

    When you get into loose, low traction conditions... on each axle, just one tire will spin, and the other does nothing (normal 'open' differential in action).

    The tire that spins is not moving you... what you need is the OTHER tire (that is on firm ground) to get the power. With four wheel drive you double your odds of getting through, and that is usually enough... but in a bad place you will have one tire in front and one tire in the rear spinning!

    A locking differential, 'locks' both tires on the same axle together so both get equal power (one can't spin and 'take away' power from the other).

    The Off Road TRD Tacoma has a factory locking rear differential. Also, with Active Traction Control (only on the Off Road 4WDs), you have near-locker action on the front and rear axles... true four wheel drive, where all the tires are working for you and not just the one on each axle (that slips).
