I didn't have any cash on me at all today, all i had was my bottle of pennies in my car...that's all i had! I wasn't trying to be funny at all. it's a form of currency. it's still money. so anyway.. i walk into Kragen's and go up to purchase a Test Light. the total was $3.59.. i go ahead and drop my pennies on the counter.. and tell him that it's 4 bucks in pennies.( it really was )
so then i take out 41 cents and pay him in exact amount.
he said okay with a smirk on his face.. then asks me if this is a joke.
he gets really pissed off and i explain to him that every penny makes a dollar, and that it's just currency...the guy refused to honor my purchase and i was like, you already rung it up and typed in $3.60.. i just took the thing and went out with a mess of pennies on the counter.

If the store is not discriminating against race/age/gender/disability, they do have the right to refuse service.

I wouldn't be surprised that if you looked deep enough into the company policy, you will find that when purchasing with x amount or more of pennies they must be rolled.

While technically true- I'm going to guess the average cashier doesn't know that policy all that well and refused his money on the "I'm too lazy" or "I must be on TV" premise...

LOL. this story reminds me of my friend Tim one time. We went into wal mart and got a few things, I paid, then he paid for his stuff- all in change. I think it was like $11. Needless to say, the old lady behind him at the U scan was not happy. She was shaking her head and looked like she was about to just pay for the damn stuff so she could get done quicker. I just laughed from the end of the registers.

A friend left a deposit of about $10 in pennies for a key at school. Thought he was being funny. At the end of the year he turned the key back in, and the guy had kept the change and gave that back to him. 'He who laughs last, laughs longest'

So next time you're in Kragen, if the guy recognizes you - you may be getting a lot of pennies as change!

I've gotten worse reactions buying stuff with $2 bills. People really do think they're counterfeit.

How about $1 coins? Don't see may of them around. You occasionally get them out of vending machines.

    QUESTION:
I thought that United States currency was legal tender for all debts. Some businesses or governmental agencies say that they will only accept checks, money orders or credit cards as payment, and others will only accept currency notes in denominations of $20 or smaller. Isn't this illegal?

    ANSWER:
The pertinent portion of law that applies to your question is the Coinage Act of 1965, specifically Section 31 U.S.C. 5103, entitled "Legal tender," which states: "United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues."

This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person or an organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash unless there is a State law which says otherwise. For example, a bus line may prohibit payment of fares in pennies or dollar bills. In addition, movie theaters, convenience stores and gas stations may refuse to accept large denomination currency (usually notes above $20) as a matter of policy.
