For the '09-'11, what are the differences between the Sport and Off Road other than hood, rims, and rear diff lock? Thanks, Bill

+1 The 08+ sport isn't capable of jack IMO. The newer ones are 'electronic' LSD, which is junk. Get the offroad or and 07 or older sport. Other key differences though is color keyed bumpers and grill. Otherwise you hit it on the nail.

There a alot of guys here saying the Auto LSD or electronic LSD is "junk"- They are wrong, it works fine! I think some of these guys should try it or learn how to use it before they make these false statements

I walked right through this. It does not work fine because you don't not have the mechanics of a limited slip which transfers the torque. Instead, AUTO LSD is nothing more than traction control, braking the spinning tire. FWIW we had to winch him over this 'easy' stuff.

I have an '07 Sport with mechanical LSD and a '12 OR w/ ALSD. The ALSD on the OR works just as well as the mechanical LSD. ALSD does transfer torque, there is no fundamental difference in performance between the two, except that as it comes from the factory ALSD/TRAC doesn't function in low range on the Sport, you just have open differentials. The older LSD not being electronic, still works in low range as it came from the factory just in the rear differential.

Was the person in that video in high range? Had they performed the yellow wire mod? If you answered no & no then they were running open differentials, not ALSD or TRAC.

even tho i wasnt there..looks like if the driver did what the spotter suggested and turned more passenger before the driver side tire hit that rock he couldve got through no problem

The biggest problem the driver had to overcome in the video was being a manual.... that being said, there was no point at where his rear tires turned at the same speed.... if they did, then he would have made it over this, and many other obstactles. In order to do the poor mans locker, you want to be on the brakes so that the differential can 'lock up' for lack of better terms. The e-lsd or alsd whatever you tards call it is already using the brakes. A real limited slip differential is far more complex, and it actually transfers the torque to the slower side.

Until someone shows me a video of two sports, side by side on difficult obstacles, one with a real posi and one the alsd junk, you will NOT convince me that the electronic limited slip is better. Its just another fancy name for the parasitic traction control braking systems. If you need traction control to stay on the road then you shouldn't be driving.

I didn't catch what he said, but I know we were trying to keep him off his nerf bars... truck is too long to make the corner without hitting that rock.

lol..i agree 100%. nothing besides an actual locker will beat a true (mechanical) LSD

And hence why I will never recommend any buys an 08+ sport. :D

LoL, He has sliders now... he didn't care about the nerf bars at the time really, they definitely got pretty beat up.

It looks like the biggest problem is that he is in low range running open differentials and you want to say the problem is ALSD.

The Sport does not have ALSD in low range.

If he does the yellow wire mod he will have ALSD in both front and rear diffs (TRAC). ALSD and TRAC will preload and distribute power better w/ a little brake pedal applied just like the old style LSD.

This is a video that sudafed posted a few days ago:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=PHbmcbiS8gI

The blue truck is running ATRAC where the same open differentials are clearly distributing torque to both wheels on both axles using the same basic system (brakes on the wheels are being used not internal clutch packs).

Believe what you want, ALSD works well when it's used - it wasn't on in the video you posted.

To point out a few things, since that's my blue truck in the video:

    - DBronzo is locked front and rear courtesy of ARB.
    - My truck is a 09 TRD OR with an essentially stock drivetrain. During this video I was e-locked in the rear, traction control up front, what is essentially maximum traction for the OR trim without driveline mods.
    - It was slick as shit out there.
    - The two fellows I roll with most are both F/R locked. They have yet to go anywhere I didn't go. On occasion, they get there with more control and smoothness, kind of like Dennis did in that video.
    - I'll be locking the front at some point.
    - This is the important one: ALSD is NOT the same system as The Traction Control System That Must Not Be Named. The OR edition tacomas have a different braking system with a hydraulic accumulator, allowing the brakes to apply MUCH more force when that system is engaged. ALSD is vacuum-powered in the newer sport models and does NOT have the same effect.

    Oh snap.

Why do things always have to be so difficult? Why not keep it simple? :D

Out of curiousity... what did you air down to? It seems like you could have gone a little lower and done better. Regardless, I'm impressed.

    20 PSI.

KM2s don't like pressure as low as other tires. I've run them as low as 12, traction never got any better. Tire damage did get worse. 20 maximizes traction and ground clearance together.

No amount of airing down is really going to help in those conditions. Notice at the beginning of the video there is standing water on the trail. It had been raining all morning and everything on the trail was caked in owl shit mud. The stuff had the same consistency as automotive grease.

You'll note Dennis and I spun at the same location. It just took a little more for me to get through because of the way traction control works. When one tire gets to spinning, it gets the brakes, which means it is no longer working to push your truck forward, but to overcome brake resistance. This allows the other wheel to get some torque, but if it's on a slippery surface as well you end up with pulsing and slipping tires on both sides of the diff.

Lockers overcome this by putting full push on both tires. If they want to slip, fine, but they're doing it in unison and ANY pushing they do will be to move the truck forward, not fight the brakes.

Not to get us off topic, but this is why electronic systems are not true equals to bona-fide mechanical ones. Are they 90% as good? After extensive experience with them I would say yes. But there's still that 10%.
