One of my favorite mods. Makes me glad I don't have a new Tacoma. No 4X4 illuminated switch mod for them.

This morning at 115k miles my stoppping distance was getting longer. So I buy pads and pull off the front wheels and inspect the brakes. They still have lots of pad left! Next I adjusted the rear brakes and it made a huge difference in stopping distance.

How did you adjust the rears? I've heard that you are suppose to put on the parking brakes while going in reverse slowly. Is that right?

Just depress and release your parking brake a couple times. As your rear brakes wear they have to travel farther to reach the drums. When you use your park brake it engages them from the bottom of the shoes rather than the top like the wheel cylinder does. As the park brake engages it will unthread a bolt (called the brake adjuster) that has a catch on it to keep it from threading back down. That bolt will unthread as necessary for the shoe to reach the drum, thus it compensates for brake wear on the shoes by spreading the shoes farther apart from each other and placing them closer to the drums.

If that doesn't make sense do some reading on brake drums. They are pretty simple.
    http://auto.howstuffworks.com/auto-parts/brakes/brake-types/drum-brake.htm
Page 3 discusses the brake adjuster.

Edit: Actually I just read that article on the brake adjuster and it says all you have to do is back up and use your brakes and it will set the adjuster, but in their diagram that brake drum setup is a little different than on the tacoma so I'm not sure which the Tacoma is. I'm still leaning towards the e-brake method as the Taco brake drum is set up identical to my '99 Hyundai.

I pulled off the drum. A the 12 o'clock position there is a sprocket looking adjuster with a sheetmetal tab placed in between the teeth. I rotated it "downward" about 4 clicks. Until I felt drag when I replaced and turned the drum. Did the same on the opposite side.
