Why is it "hit or miss" when trying to get the rear diff to engage?

Unlike A-TRAC, the rear locker is a mechanical process (engaged by an electric motor)... It may take more than one attempt.

 

Turn you steering wheel one direction.

Just shared this info with a new V6 auto DC owner who had no idea of the options. Also, this makes three new owners I've met who assumed that 4L had all the bells and whistles engaged at the get go rather than open diffs.

 

Yes indeed... Only the Off Road 4WD has traction control in low range (A-TRAC), all other 4WD Tacomas will do better in most traction situations staying in high range 4WD, where they all have TRAC working all 4 tires to limit slip/ spin.

They may do the 4-low-trac mod and trick the truck into making TRAC work in low range... Rave reviews by those who have!

 

Mod? I thought in 4lo you just pushed ATRAC on.

 

Didnt someone figure out there there is actually 10 drive modes on the 2012s? The one I think is missing in the list 4H and trac off (short quick push on the button). IIRC my 12 will do this.

Had our first real snow dump up here, 10". It's true what they say, 4WD does NOT increase traction. Very fun learning the traction control in the white stuff.
