I've used a pop up canopy lowered just over the side rails of the truck. Works great and is multi purpose.

I did this and used it a half a dozen times with my Ford Ranger when my son was in the Boy Scouts, I did not want to sleep on the ground unless I had to. It worked well for what it was, a tarp wrapped around a bunch of PVC pipe.

    stock, for now
All the pvc, bungees, tarps and what ever else will add up to $100..so for a cheapy tent for a few $$ more may just be worth it

Also check craigslist and ebay along with this forum and a few others..you may find a deal on one from someone in your shoes..

Or you could just buy this tent from REI and call it good. That way you can also use it camping when you aren't using your own vehicle.

    same shit as everyone else
Honestly though I take a 10X18 tarp and wrap it around my tool box and out the end of the bed with it tied to a tree i'll park next to. THis way I can have a couple chairs under it too next to the fire. Lay my foam pad in the back and sleep on that. The dog keeps me warm if it gets below 40.

im sorry but i disagree with how much you believe the materials will cost. to build what i was talking about i already have some pvc and a tool box full of bungee cords and parachute chord. i found 20ft of pvc pipe for $4 dollars and an 8' x 10' tarp from walmart for $7. but it doesnt matter because im not building one anymore lol

Just grab a tarp from walmart, a roll of duct tape, (tailgate sealer)and some rope.

    1. Lay the tarp over the truck bed.
    2. Use the rope to attach the tarp to the vehicle.
    3. Throw your girlfriend in the back with a few adult beverages.
    4. tape up the tailgate from the inside.
    5. Screw away...and enjoy....
