In-Dash Navigation

Looks good, the only thing I would do is drill out new holes in the mounting brackets so the deck sits a little deeper in the dash.

 

declan : thanks for posting your experience ! do you have any other updates? i've been wanting to get this head unit, i spend 4-6 hours a day in my taco and drive quite a bit a day, so start up time and nav are extremely key, is there a warranty with the refurb unit? hows the handsfree calling and rerouting?

 

I'm in beginning stages of my audio build and found a lot of great info and products on *********.com. I am gonna buy some of their wiring kits made specifically for Tacomas for an easier JBL conversion to a Kenwood double din (Kenwood dnx7190hd) and the auto programming steering wheel control adapter, which from what I've read works the quickest, with no lag.
Their videos are pretty good too. I didn't buy speakers or baffle adapters from them because I went with Mr. Marv (whom has been extremely helpful, knowledgeable, honest) for speakers, baffles, and a small sub enclosure.

 

let me know how that head unit is!!! i've been eyeing that one, it has a faster gui than the 9980 so its a good step up. did you buy it yet?

 

Not yet I've got a little more time left, but I hear ya on the GUI speed, hate to touch and wait especially while driving.
I've researched all the top brands and basically the boot up speed, GUI speed and Navigation refresh speeds are essential to having a unit that won't drive you crazy.
I also found that the steering wheel control adapter on from ********* appears to be the best, alot of the other adapters have a lag time, even ********* old one did. Another thing that would drive me crazy...

What mounting adapter are you looking at? I'm looking for the most stock looking one, I'm looking at Metra and scoche.

 

i think ill be going with the metra, ive heard pros and cons to both so ill probably be doing some sanding and what not which doesnt bother me. when do you plan on getting your head unit? im stuck between the 7190 and 9990, i dont use aha radio so i might as well save the $100-$150 difference... though a 2yr warranty doesnt sound bad at all.

 

Id go with the good ole avic-110bt if you can find a bnib one somewhere

 

Mr. Marv suggested the Blk colored Metra, for quality and matching, I trust his expeirence but was still doing my due diligence on research but have decided on the metra as well. Probably buying in the next 3 weeks.
Whats the aha radio, or was that a typo?

I just checked out the AVIC-Z110BT and although it has alot of the same options, it doesnt have Garmin and doesnt have the quality of EQ the Kenwood has(I'm puting in a nice system), the Resolution on the screen is less and it has also been discontinued. The Garmin and the EQ is enough for me to stick it out with the Kenwood.

 

Not a typo, haha. Theres few differences between the 7190 vs 9990, some of which being a 2nd USB connection and AHA radio, which is kinda like pandora but a little more intuitive. The 9990 is also the Excelon line which is the top of the line and carries a 2yr warranty compared to the 1yr of the 7190. I'll be getting mine pretty soon too, and I'll be getting the textured din panel to keep it relatively stock. I'm pretty excited. I use my nav everyday so I need something reliable,
Garmins the way to go.

 

Are you planning on replacing your JBL system entirely, ripping out the JBL amp/sub in the back as well? I've replaced every component and am having trouble finding a wire harness that will work with the JBL wire harness in the dash. I'm replacing my factory JBL head unit with a Kenwood 9990, but I can't find a way to connect it to the wire harness. All the harnesses you can buy are designed for the non-JBL system, but I can't find one that will work with JBL wire harness connector. Have you approached this issue yet in your conversion? The only thing I've found is either manually splicing or the possibility of using an older harness from scosche that is for 99-2006 JBL systems, but I haven't tried it yet cuz it's in the mail still.

i want a head unit with XM radio and the one from ottonavi.com does not have it and they said they have generation coming out but i have been waiting for two montha now... no news
