So here I am, stuck on trying to make a decision. My off road adventures are 90% in the desert full of whoops, small and large rocks. My truck is 2wd w/ the locker so lately I've been trying some amature rocks and venturing through small river beds, but most of the time it's going sideways in a dried up river bed some where in the Ocitillo/anza borrego desert.

I've had the Nitto TG's before and I LOVED them, they were truly awesome... however I was thinking of trying something different. Once I started searching again I ran across the definity M/T (made by cooper tire) and since they're super cheap (140 a pop for a 285 tire) I thought i might give them a go. I'm looking at the dune grappler b/c it's different and a designed for the desert.

I'm not going to buy BFG. Why? Pretty much everybody has them + I've been through a few sets myself, a totally awesome tire but I want to try something different.

You guys think I'd be happy w/ the M/T tire in the desert? I'm not so sure about it being too stable at high speeds and sliding around corners. Thanks for the help!!!

Well, the TG's should treat you well. Those Dune Grapplers are supposed to do good in sand and on the street as long as you don't hit too much standing water on the road or mud offroad. The MT's would probably be good to but might have a tendency to bite with the sidewall a tad more when sliding the rear of the truck. They'd certainly do good for digging you through some stuff, but would also be louder on the road. In deep sand(read: dunes), they may dig too much and leave you buried where the others wouldnt dig as much. All considerations for ya to think about.

Good point. ahh! more options to decide on... didn't think of that before though about the dune grapplers digging too much. I was looking at the M/T just b/c it's cheap and different from what I've tried...

 

problem with the dune grapplers is there not so good in water, I know it barely rains in san diego but when it does u dont want to have traction problems, these trucks are bad enough as it is haha

 

True, but I don't exactly go charging up DUNES on a regular. That would be an area like gordons well and glamis, but when you go there u need somethin like a quad/bike or really pimped out super awesome 4x4/ prerunner

 

good to know, I haven't read too much about those tires but I'm sure that is true.

 

I was just being a smart ass. I am actually eager to see someone run the definiteys because I want a set of the ATs

 

The TG's are a good tire I had them on my first gen and got like 39 thousand miles and still had plenty tread left. the dune ones look pretty slick with the flame job side walls and look like they would last but not to sure about rock crawling if You really want to crawl you might end up wanting something more aggressive. I my self am trying to pick a tire and wheel that I like but I think I will go with the Nittos MTs and am looking at the prcomp 1089's I got some pics on the other thread.

 

If you're up for considering other tires, look up the Hankook Dynapro AT RF10:

I read a comparison of them against the Toyo AT and BFG AT and they were the overall winner. Said they were the best of the 3 off road and were still good on the road too.

 

I just looked and those Hankook's are only 159 a piece from Discount Tire for a 285/75/16.

I've got dune grapplers... they're good... I haven't ever run into a problem with the dune grapps in the rain out here (it rains a lot out here... )...

If I had a choice, I'd go back to Cooper STTs, but I wanted to try something different this time. PM WW_Firefighter -- he lives in the desert and has the dune grapps.

 

i love my terra grapplers, from dry wet snow mud everything ive taken them through theyve performed pretty damn good.

 

I just bought a set of BFG 255/75/17 M/T tires and they are great. I am hoping to have them put on today. If you want the Definity's, check my for sale on the forum. You can save yourself some $$$$.

 

Just read all the reviews about this tire on Tires.com and everyone seems to really like them. Good price to compared to other ATs

 

I understand wanting to try something different but I think you have already found the best tire for what you want to do. The grass is not always greener.

 

Thanks relenteless taco! Another tire to read about... it seems that an A/T tire would be better suited to what my truck is set up to do. Go fast! Unless some one can convince me otherwise.

I know that Toyo makes the nitto and that they're a/t is related to the TG and these Hankooks look very similar w/o the small grooves that extend on the sides of the TG's... this tire looks pretty cool. 159 a pop isn't so bad but very close in price to a nitto 285. However, if the review said it beat the Toyo AT then it might beat the TG. Alright time to read some more.

 

I'm a fan of MT's because of where I live and how I use my truck, but if I were going to get a set of AT's, I really think those would be my choice after reading about them. They actually look a little more aggressive than most of the other AT's to me, but the center tread should make them pretty efficient on the highway and all those sipes should make them do real good on wet pavement and Ice.

 

True, see you have a winch and a little something called a transfercase in the front (ah the beauty of it). This makes a big difference on how you wheel and the terrain you tackle. Guess i'll stay clear of the M/T and see how these hankooks do against the competition.
