Went to my local Jiffy Lube the other day to get an oil change, and the guy shows me my cabin air filter. Now I have 26,000 miles on my 08 DC and it's never been changed, so it's really time for a new filter.

I ask the guy how much, and he says $39.99.......... I thought I was hearing things, so I asked him again.... How Much ??? He gives me a weird look and says $39.99. Well after a few seconds of silence I looked back and said. Ummmm, NO.

    Are they F'in kidding me?

Apparently I'm in the wrong business. At $39.99 I could live the life of a king selling and installing cabin air filters.

Nothing I hate worse than some dipchit trying to upsell me at a JiffyLube. Almost enough to make me go back to changing my own oil Almost.

I just went through this on our Toyota Camry. The filter itself is like $15 and they charge you $20+ to install it. I bought the damn filter and installed it myself in like 3 minutes. In the Camry it sits behind the glove box behind a plastic cover. What a joke.

The 2005+ Tacoma is in the same location.

And they did me another favor...... When they took out the glove box to check the filter, they damaged the little plastic thingy that the "shock absorber" snaps onto, so now it won't stay attached.......

Had to carry my work truck to one for service and they filled it with oil twice. 12 quarts of oil in a Ford 4.6L. When I took it back to them they all looked at each other and scratched their asses.

That's exactly my point, and with buying these paerts for a nation wide chain, they probably get them even cheaper.....

all thoes lube stop/ jiffy lube places are run by a bunch of high school dropout wanna be mechanics. thats about as low as you can go in the automotive industry.
i am suprised any of the people that frequent this board even go there!
are you kidding me? and on a truck for gods sake! you dont even have to jack the thing up to change the oil! when i change the oil in my lexus i have to put it on jack stands just to get under it!.
for thoes of you who pay someone to change your oil read THIS!...

when i go the auto parts store to get my oil i take my drain pan with me so i can dump the old oil thats been sitting in my garage from the last oil change, i buy a filter and a 5 quart oil change jug and i keep a case of the same oil in the garage to top off with.
each time i change my oil it costs me about 36 dollars! you could change the oil at home TWICE for the same price you pay to get harrassed about a cabin filter, air filter, and wiper blades. you dont get any stripped drain plugs, and no oil leaks!
if you have a 2nd gen tacoma you have one of the slickest oil filter change arrangements i have ever seen!
why the hell would go through all that when a trip to autozone, 36 bucks and 15 minutes under your truck you can change it yourself?

i usually change 2 cars at 1 time to save an additional trip. as my drain pan holds 12 quarts.

I am a tech at a mom and pop shop, i am a college student, we are recommending things some people overlook, its still up to the customer to agree to buy it or not. My philosophy is if my mom was here would she need to be informed about the certain service? Knowing my mother she would definitely tell them to make a side note about it to ask me at least to see if i could do it for her or to get it next time. as the good son i am i tell her that dad can do it and tell her that i will talk to dad to tell him what he needs and where it is at. You have to remember that not everyone has someone to ask about stuff like that. As for people paying 36.99(we are the most expensive in town) for conventional oil is ridiculous in my opinion. for that price you can change it yourself and use a wix filter and synthetic oil, but like I said, not everyone has the luxury of having someone to take it to. So in the end its not about us or at least for me, about upselling, be have the customer aware of their vehicle maintenance needs. As for our CAF we charge 29.99. We are the most expensive in oil changes but our prices for everything is we are the lowest. So please dont get mad at the tech informing you about your vehicle, he might be going fulltime to college and fulltime at the shop and trying to ends meet. This is not an excuse by the way

This thread was not intended to bash the techs...... They are only doing their job and I reccognize that.

My problem is with the corporate idiots that set the prices and policies.

    Bass Mechanic......

Not all of us have the time or knowhow to do what it takes to maintain our vehicles. For me (and many others), it's a matter of convenience. I flat out don't have the time to do this myself, so I'm willing to pay for the service. And... Just because I own a truck, that doesn't make me (or anyone else) a shadetree mechanic.

I NEVER take my truck anywhere unless it is absolutely something I cannot fix myself. As a result, the ONLY thing I've ever had to have done by a professional was have a new cat welded in place. I would've done it myself but in Cali, it has to be done by a tech. I always change my own oil/brakes/plugs/clutch/water pump/starter, or whatever. That way if something screws up, its my fault.

Because some of us live in apartments where we are not allowed to do any sort of mechanical work.... Seriously, I was changing a flat tire one day, and the building manager was out there in no time to see what I was up to.

I'm always wondering what they do when they charge you like $119.95 for a fuel injector cleaning when your vehicle hits 30k miles. They try and tell you that just becuase it isn't in your maintenance schedule that it still needs to be done. It seems like it only takes them 10 minutes. What do they do, pour in a $5.00 bottle of cleaner?

I hate going to get my vehicle inspected here in NC because you usually have to go to one of those quick oil change places where they try and up-sell you on everything. I think they will also mess with your vehicle when doing the inspection just to be able to charge you extra for something that is now all of the sudden going to cause you to fail.

Then about the inspections - $30.00 to have a 1 year old vehicle inspected? What a rip - off.
The assholes running our state don't have a clue.

In Colorado, they would give you at least 3 years exemption on a new vehicle.

They wanted to flush my engine. Said it was recommended with my milage. I had about 6'000 miles on it. Yep- not a misprint- 6 thousand miles. What a joke.

Years ago I was cruising through town in my 79 Toy Pickup and one of the Qukie type lube shops were running a really good sale price, all the way down the road they had signs up and I was thinking that it didn't sound too bad but I always do my own

Well as I get close to the shop their are 3 guys jumping up and down in the street with signs that said

    We are bored
Next Car gets $5 off the sale price

Quikly running numbers through my head as I drive by them I figured it would cost about the same if I did it myself so did a U-turn and pulled in, the 3 guys dropped their signs and swarmed my truck and one escorted me to the waiting room

I got a magazine and barely opened it and noticed a guy standing in front of me holding an air filter, he says "Dude, this thing is all black and nasty looking, you should probably have us change it"

I look up from the magazine and say "So what part of that Bright Red sticker that says STOP K&N Lifetime filter inside DO NOT DISCARD do you not understand?
And for your info it's supposed to look black and nasty or it doesn't work so put it back where you found it.

He walks out the door and another guy walks in holding a wiper blade, walks up to me and says "These are all worn out, I think we have this size in stock and could change them for you"

I look up and say That's funny cause I just bought the fuckin blades yesterday so quit tearing my truck apart piece by piece and change my oil.

That was the last quikie type oil change I ever attempted

ya know, not all people who work in a jiffy lube or the same idea as one, is bad. I work a jiffy lube style shop, and ive been there for 3 years, and I dont forget anything or rip people off. Thats just asking for trouble.
