OP get a mod to move this over to BST gen2, you will have better luck over there. Welcome to TW.. Jim

 

I'd recommend going aftermarket unless you tend to need a lot of tough recoveries. A class 3 receiver from a reputable brand will be plenty strong enough to handle anything you'll be able to tow with the 4 banger. So far, I like my Hiddenhitch but there are plenty of other good brands out there.

 

PM La0d0g, he has a stock hitch to sell I believe.

 

OE Toyota class 5 hitch for the win....ties the bumper in for added strength instead of those flimsy POS brackets that hold your bumper on now. Also ties your entire frame together in the rear taking a ton of play out of it. The difference wil be night and day when installed.

Always better to have something stronger then needed then have something week and need it stronger

pretty sure oe toyota hitches are class IV on the tow package, and the hitches they install at the dealer or at "port" are class III

Meh, my Hidden Hitch has held up well over the years. The OEM one is beefy as hell but for what most people use their non-tow package equipped trucks for, any reputable class 3 will do. I wouldn't want to do a tough recovery with one though, and mentioned that as a precaution. For tough recoveries, I'd get an OEM receiver to yank on.

And I believe OEM is class IV as nammer mentioned.

 

I have the OEM trailer hitch from my 2009 2.7 I'm willing to sell. I'm a little north of Austin. PM me with an offer if you're interested. It's just sitting in my garage at the moment since my 4.0 already has a OEM hitch and my 2.7 has a TAG bumper now.

Don't mean to be short. At work currently until 5 today and haven't research going price. Let me know if this works for you.

 

Good luck with finding one, but if you decide to go oem, try to get your hands on the two reinforcement brackets that tie the bottom of the receiver hitch to the frame. They are almost 40 bucks a piece from Toyota. Plus all new mounting hardware you're looking at about 125 bucks total. I just got a quote from the local dealership on this. Trying to help a friend install one on his taco.

Mine has all this. We essentially took the entire bumper/bracket/hitch assembly off so I have everything needed for installation in my garage. Let your friend know, if he's still looking, Rogu3 Pr3dator.

 

Wait, to the frame? Other than the OE installation brackets? I'm sorry, upon reread, I'm second guessing myself I have all the original stuff, nothing added or aftermarket, if that clarifies.

 

There are two small brackets that bolt to the bottom of the frame and to the bottom two bolts on the OEM receiver hitch. Most people, myself included, dont even notice them when they do a bumper swap. But chances are that if you have an after market plate bumper, especially those with a built in receiver hitch, then these brackets are helping hold the bumper on. Part number 51998C in the picture bellow. It actually mounts just to the rear of where the part number is on the bottom of the frame in the drawing. Hope this clears everything up.
