I just got rid of my 2009 Tacoma Access Cab. I didn't like driving it, because I thought it was too big. Toyota already has a bigger truck, the Tundra, so I don't know why they decided to make the 2nd generation Tacoma bigger. I had a 1997 Tacoma, and I thought it was just the right size.

The 1997 had a locking door on the gas tank filler hole. I don't understand why the 2009 didn't have a locking door. I hated not having a lock on the input to my gas tank.

I don't understand why the 2009 still had a radio antennae sticking up from the passenger side. Why couldn't they put that in the windshield? At least it was not a power antennae like the 1997 had, which I had a lot of problems with it sticking in the down position.

And what is with the crappy radio in the 2009? It worked well with an MP3 player, although I had to purchase an in-line amplifier, because it just wasn't loud enough without one. But, FM continuously faded in and out. It was like the antennae wasn't connected properly.

And, if you're ever thinking about putting a hard tonneau cover on yours - don't. It makes the truck worthless for hauling anything, and turns it into a car with a large trunk.

And, if you want a 4x4 for winter driving, get an all wheel drive instead. This winter I used my front wheel drive Camry instead of the truck when the roads were semi-bad, because they weren't snow covered enough to engage the four wheel drive, and I didn't want to be out in a rear wheel drive truck. I was always afraid of damaging the 4WD.

And the bed is too big. I don't like it when my groceries slide around. And it's too damn high as well. It hurts my knees bending up to get in. Plus, it's hard to look at the people in the next car from that angle.
And what's up with the sliding rear window?? I can't get used to opening it sideways? I keep pushing down on it.

    My fingers hurt!

Well now your back is going to hurt, you just pulled landscaping duty!

(In all seriousness, why did you buy a Tacoma then? You could have thought about some of your issues stated above before you bought it...)

Sounds like you made the right choice the second time.

If a window laid antenna and a locking gas cap were that important there are options....but those should have been obvious when you bought the truck. Same for the size and the hard tonneau...Buyers remorse isn't the trucks fault.

The radio is a known issue and you should have been able to talk to your dealership about it.

The being scared of damaging the 4WD so you drove your Camry instead - That means you need to learn how to drive in snow...Not that AWD is better. I drove a rear wheel- 2WD minivan in high school and never had any problems.

Stick to the Camry, leave the trucks to people who need 'em.

    See ya.

    Thanks for sharing.
Not much to add except I was glad they got rid of the locking gas cap because the salt corroded it on previous hiluxes .
Then I was SOL when I went to add gas.
oh I forgot, as far as the 4WD in snow c'mon. There is plenty of people who rock these trucks in the Northeast & Canada.
    Hurt the system?
Also a trifold tonneau easy on easy off
    Trucks ftw

Ok, so this seems to be a "waaaaah, 2ng gen is so much bigger than 1st gen" thread. Wow. Not really, it only *looks* so much bigger.

Compared to 1st gen, 2nd is.... wheelbase 5 inches more (that means length).
    Overall length 5 inches more.
    Width 4 inches more.
    Height 2 inches taller
    Weight 73 pounds heavier.

Waaah, its so much bigger... LOL.

As for the rest of your rant... locking gas cap: available for $10 from your nearest autoparts store. Antenna... why the hell would anyone want it stuck in the windshield??? Weak radio output -- perhaps you should get som HEARING AIDS -- this is a problem with YOU. Don't like the tonneau cover, TAKE IT OFF AND THROW IT OUT!!!!

I think the paint is also too nice and the seats are too supportive. I get in dukes of hazard style thought the window so I don't damage the door handles. Another problem is the plastic bed, for some reason it takes so much time to wax because of the crevices and storage pockets.
