Leaking and clueless!

Have no idea what this is that is leaking, can anyone give me the spiel on this? Not sure as to the severity as it is only a bead of oil but i do recognize that any leak is cause for concern, its been like this for months. Finally got around to posting the issue. I Do have the Vibrating driveline issue that so many here have endured. Any relation?? .

Tailshaft seal

 

You know what oil is leaking? Is it tranny oil? and is it related to the driveline shudders?

 

Trans fluid and probably not

 

It is transmission fluid. The seal between the slip yoke and transmission might be broken or worn. I would say there is nothing to do right now, just monitor it and see if it gets worse (more than one tiny drip). Mine did that, a while back, you would see "A" drop, but I would never see it drip nor did I ever see any spots on the ground. Eventually the drop was gone.

 

Do you have any puddles or spots on the ground underneath you?

 

It is a 30 minute repair I would fix it. Modern toyotas are not meant to leak

 

How long did you see these signs before you saw that the drop was gone?

 

Yeah im gonna look into the part you mentioned. thanks for the intel, not being able to fix the shuddering driveshaft has me paranoid ha ha

 

I am sorry that you have a seal leaking. That is your transmission output shaft seal, Toyota may call it something else, but it is the seal that keeps your transmission fluid inside the case. If your mechanically able, you can do this your self. You safely jack up your truck and apply jack stands to hold your truck up. You then place a pan to catch the transmission fluid under your leaking seal and you remove your drive shaft from the differential and pull it slowly out of the transmission. Using a seal removing tool or carefully prying out the seal , then you reapply the new seal and reapply your drive shaft and lower your truck and the leak should stop.
As for the vibration in the drive shaft causing the leak? It is possible and until the vibration problem is fixed, the new seal could leak also. It is hard to say how long it would take for that to happen. Good Luck

 

Just a couple of weeks. Are you noticing anything on the ground? Have you done any recent work or anything happen to your truck?

 

Nope...the truck shows as much as yours did. a small bead but no drip on the ground. Ive wiped it off a couple of times and it will always return to that state. Im gonna have to keep an eye on it.

 

Thanks! I am not the most mechanically inclined aside from the standard oil change but its worth doing my homework and nipping it in the but before it snowballs. I have something to go off now. Much obliged

 

It is fairly simple to do, but read up a little more in depth ahead of time. If you have never dealt with a driveshaft before, do a little reading and know your basic parts and what they do. IMO, it always helps to have even just a limited knowledge of how the parts that you are working on work and and intertwine with the other the other parts they are connected too.

 

I hear ya. definitely beats the dealership rates. Ive made it a point to avoid those whenever possible.

 

As cliche as it may sound I believe there is a TSB on this seal (if it's actually bad), but you're well out of warranty for that. There was a thread somewhere here showing pics of the cab floor around that part that had been sprayed with fluid that had been seeping out. I've had a similar 'drop' on the same spot, and I had a dealer technician tell me that small amounts of seepage is normal when I was in getting my LSD serviced. I'd keep an eye on it and think about replacing it sometime if you're worried about it. Speaking of, I need to check up and see how mine is doing

What was that 1:50 to replace?

They are very easy to do if you have done one before. But easy to F up if you have not.

 

Since you can't monitor the fluid level with a dipstick..I would replace.
