Sorry, was on my phone and missed that post for some reason. Thanks for the heads up on this. I just ordered one. Way cheaper than anything else I could find. Just couldn't bring myself to spend 40 bucks for a fancy hinge...

[IMG] Finally got mine on. It turned out nice and i like how it blends in with the mgm. My paint skills are mediocre to poor, but I can tell you there is plenty on it. I flexed it and everything is ducky. Sure is nice to have that extra clearance underneath...stock would probably be dragging in the pic. I used the spring hinge lic. plate bracket but painted it black. That worked out ok, but the springs are crazy strong so watch your fingers. Turns out this bumper was 4# less than the stocker w/tow hitch. Big thanks to Billy on a well thought out product. This was the last big piece of my build and I'm glad I waited.

It took me forever to get off my ass and get this thing coated and mounted, but it's done now. Everything lined up perfectly. The bumper weighs about 5 pounds more than the stock bumper with the tow package.

I had Billy make the recovery point holes larger to accomodate 6-1/2 ton shackles. I'm a structural engineer and the shackle I spec out for lifts every day is the 6-1/2 ton Crosby G-2130 so I had to use them on the truck. Maybe I'll run the calc to see what the tensile strength of the recovery point is. I'm sure the recovery point will fail long before the shackle. :D

    It looks real good man.

I really wanna see testing on the recovery point though. I've yanked the shit out of it while pulling another member out of deep snow and it held up fine.

When I say yanked I mean I had a 30' tow strap (not recovery strap) and would back up to about 5' away from his truck and punch it. He was 2wd stuck in a patch of heavy snow and I was on dryish ground. Pulled so hard his seat moved back in the railing and my chest hit the steering wheel haha.

    Recovery point held up fine.

The calculation is pretty simple on this one. The failure point, if it ever fails, will be top to bottom across the hole in the recovery point. The plate is 3/4" thick and there is about 1/2" of plate above and below the hole. (The holes in my recovery points are 1-1/8, by my request) Basically find the area of steel in tension and multiply it by the yield strength.

    Area of steel:
    2 x 1/2" x 3/4" = 3/4 sq. in

    Steel yield strength = 36,000 lbs/sq. in

    Strength of recovery point = 36,000 x 3/4 = 27,000 lbs = 13.5 tons

So my original assumption that the plate would fail before the 6.5 ton shackle wasn't entirely true if you look at it without considering the safety factor on the shackle. I believe the safety factor is something like 6:1 on the shackles, so the plate will still fail first.

Billy, bumper looks great. Thanks for the help on the phone. it did have some paint scraped off on the edges when it arrived. Is there a primer you would recommend for me to touch up the spots?

Oh, and where to get shackles (Home Depot?) and is there a specific size I should look for?

If your bumper is like mine, it only comes in a black primer. I wiped down with acetone, wet sanded with 600 grip, re-primered and then painted.

Often fabricators don't ship painted bumpers because they always get scuffed up in transit.

If you ordered your bumper painted, feel free to disregard my babble

Tracking down my bumpers was a pain in the ass haha. They weren't sent to the store I requested because of the lack of a forklift. Then the store they were sent to moved locations and never updated the information on the site. I called them and the guy directed me to the new place where I had to wait for 20 minutes until I guy came down to open up the place and grab my bumpers. They were scuffed up a little bit too but I didn't care. I covered those bitches in some bedliner paint.

Here they are before I started painting:

Waiting for the first bit to dry before I flip them over and paint the rest tomorrow :)

Thanks. I was thinking of just leaving the primer on there, but I guess I should re-primer and paint. What kind of paint did you use?

Just to clarify, I did leave the primer on there. I merely gave it a bit of a scuffing so a second coat of primer would adhere. Paint used was Krylon flat black.

Ah...just Krylon spray paint. Easy enough. That's what I was thinking was to sand for adherence, touch up the bare metal with primer, and then paint. Has anyone simply left it primered with no paint?

mine wasnt primed very well so i had to paint it. I used rustoleum spray on bedliner then sprayed duplicolor paint over that! Came out really nice
