I cut some wires here. Added some wires there.
If you cut the exhaust before the muffler how is it still going to have one? Are you putting it back on?

Smog isn't the issue. The lack of the muffler being in the system and operating is.

California Vehicle Code Section 27150, Adequate Muffler Required:
    (a) Every motor vehicle subject to registration shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise, and no muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass, or similar device.

California Vehicle Code Section 27151, Modification of Exhaust Systems:
    (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle... No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.

EDIT: Based on the other vehicle modifications you show and list, it seems you are a fan of violating all sorts of vehicle code laws, so the above probably won't stop you from doing it even more.

Yeah, he would definitely attract a lot of attention (especially the cops) with that mod...:D

But I assume he meant to change or reroute the tailpipe and muffler??

OP you will not gain any performance after removing the muffler from your exhaust system.

Why dont you get a set of high flow cats and a different muffler?

OP, after cutting off the muffler, do you intend to weld on a downward-facing nozzle? If not, the hot exhaust gases will be aimed at the frame and floorpan. The exhaust is typically cut aft of the rear axle so it fires downward.

On newer vehicles they don't even put a probe in the tail pipe. They plug in to your computer. So.......No this will not help.

So you are really wondering if leaving the muffler on the truck but not actually functioning as part of the exhaust system will allow you to pass an emissions test? Just throw the muffler in the bed and let them know you still have it and you should be good.

Does the test technician do just an emission test, or does he check other items for compliance (lights working, etc.)?

that OP didnt make any sense, but im guessing he means... to cut it off after the muffler, or before it , if you were looking from the back end. , and if that's the case, i dont see why it wouldnt pass, but you would get some sooty crap after a while underneath ur bed.

Okay, I can see how that might be pieced together. Thus showing why grammar and punctuation are necessary.

I assume you mean you want to dump it over the axle after the muffler and yes you can and it shouldn't affect any testing.

Sounds to me like he is referring to the muffler tip. If that's the case, yes, you can cut off as much as you want as long as you don't cut out the actual muffler (OP, crawl under the truck, you'll see it...). I'd recommend cutting it so it turns down away from the cab.
