So this chick from my school decides to rear end me today, the damage isn't that bad and i have minor whiplash. The chick (another one from my school) in front of me hears a fire truck and decides to fucking slam on her brakes... the fire truck isn't even in the damn vicinity. Fortunately I didn't hit her. Anyway I'm hoping i can somehow get a offroad bumper out of this deal... any ideas on how to do that? She's going through insurance.

Her dodge got owned pretty good, i was surprised at my truck.

No money, all went to truck...
I leave in my hitch and ball 24/7 to give me added protection from rearenders.

You'll likely have to take your truck to her insurance adjuster, and they'll give you the option to either leave it at their shop for x amount of days, and you'll have your truck back looking like new (stock), or they'll cut you a check right there and then for the parts/labor they would normally charge to do the repairs (in case you have your own shop you like)...just use the cash towards some armor! :D

In some state it's illegal to have the receiver in your truck unless you’re towing.

Military hitch is someting like this, with the latch over it. Some have balls, and others are just like this picture that receives a ring on the trailer tongue.

OP, that sucks. Make sure there is no hidden damage under the truck before you just take a cash settlement. If you have the shop repair it and they find more damage, they get more money from the insurance to fix it. If you take a cash settlement and you find something else later, it might be difficult/impossible to get anything else out of the insurance.

I pretty much always have my recovery hook in, if I get rear-ended I can rip their front end off...

Hahaha I had a silly girl wrap the front end of her Eclipse around one of these that was hooked up to my work truck. In a Drive trough. The hitch got a few scratches and she had to be towed away...

2" ball/pintel combo here too. Mounted to a 5/8" plate gusseted to a piece of 2" solid square stock. I also have a 7/8" D-ring shackle in a custom mount right below the pintel. I would feel sorry for who ever rear ends me cause it's gonna do damage. Future mods are a high clearance steel bumper with spare carrier, box in the rear frame, cut out the spare tire carrier and x-bracing to add an aux fuel tank with skid plate and new cross braces. Add in a 3" lift with shackle flip kit and the rear of my truck should be pretty bullet proof against nearly anything, including a full size truck.

To bad about the tailgate that is probably more expensive than the bumper.

Have the insurance do some damage estimates and tell them you want the cash for the repairs instead of having them do all the work. This way you can buy whatever replacement parts you want instead of having them buy OEM. I would always do this, it gives you greater control over what is going onto your truck and who is doing the work.

Also for even more control go through YOUR insurance. They will fight for you with the other motorist's insurance to get you paid. This way you can even do the estimates yourself too - go to some shops and ask for an estimate - do this at several places then present the highest dollar amount to your claim agent. They may have their own people come out to look at it too.

Thanks, i hope i can opt to take the money.

Ya i think i will start doing that.

I will definitely try to get that check, thanks!

    Haha yes.

Yes i was pleasantly surprised with the taco.

Gotta get me one of those

Yes this happened to my parents just a little while ago. The people paid cash and then later there was some hidden damage even though we took it to a reputable body shop. Thanks for the advice I tried to look for any hidden damage and i couldn't find any. I'll have to take a better look tomorrow.

Sounds like a solid build you're going to have there. Yeah I'm gunna bet the tail gate is going to be damn expensive.

Will most insurance companies cut you a check? That is what I'd like to do. I will go to several body shops tomorrow and then talk to my insurance agent. I was unaware that i could go through my insurance instead of dealing with the other insurance. Do you have any input on diminished value? I'm just wondering if that applies to my situation. Thanks for the advice! I have a lot to learn about.. well, everything
