just wondering how important the tire pressure monitoring system is when replacing stock wheels? can this be added to new wheels?

 

Use the search field in the top right corner on this web site and type in TPMS. As long as the TPMS fit in the new wheels, you'll be fine. Only way to find out is to do a fit test.

 

thanks for the info -- i'm just replacing my stock '12 rims with the older tacoma sport rims, so i'm assuming the TPMS will work for this?

 

TPMS from the stock steelies will not work on alloys -- they have a different angle to the valve (speaking from experience). If you are going from alloy to alloy you should be OK.

You can get new TPMS sensors and see if you can sell the old ones, they are kind of expensive though.

 

Or just not worry about tpms, and just check your tire pressure regulary, like when you get gas.

There's a procedure posted in a couple of threads.

The exact procedure varies depending on your year. First year or two you cut and ground a wire, later years you cut and apply power.


The steel wheel TPMS sensors WILL work with alloys, but you have to flip them 180 degrees, and in the future, any tire mounting guys need to be aware of this so they don't break them when removing the tires.
