Thank you sir. :) they were ridiculous! He turned them on twice, one time I happened to be looking right at them and I was blinded! He had 2 small ones on the back that engaged when he threw it into reverse. Easily $2,000+ in lights on that rig.

Its possible to get really close to the hummers. You need to stand still though with the camera up and ready. Took this with my old 250mm. Was about 2ft from the bird... they swoop in and buzz around your head. One even came up to investigate the lens one day. The 1st year I tried to get pics I tried through the window in the kitchen, one of them would come right up to the glass all the time because it saw me moving. Very curious birds.

A flash is also the trick to getting them nice and clear

The hummingbird at my grandparents house sits there and lets me walk up to it. He just sits there and lets me do whatever I want. He isn't afraid lol

they used to buz my mom's head when the feeder was empty. Then they would hover in front of her face.

So I've just got my 18-55mm lens on my D3000, but have some money to get another lens...I shoot a lot of fishing pictures...And some long distance scenery..

There's a 55-300mm DX/VR/AF lens that's brand new in the box on CL right now for $300 OBO...I was initially looking at a 55-200mm lens, but this didn't seem like too bad of a deal..

What do y'all think? Too much for my skill level?

IMO no lens is necessarily out of anybody's skill level, only bodies.

Sounds like a good deal, I don't know anything about the lens though :p

    What is the maximum f/

Meh, that's pretty good for that range. Not the best though IMO at 300.

As long as the IQ is good I say that you go for it.

You need to get some footy with that.

Any lens flare caused by the light?

Dude! I love where you're going with this but you need some light filler! Go get a cheap flash man...pop it off in key locations while your shutter is open!

Thanks for the tip, I have a decent (not great but not horrible) flash add on that I can use... Didn't think about doing that. It's a great idea, I'll definitely try that out next time.

Here's a few more that I took for shits and giggles.

Here's a really really late reminder that there is a solar eclipse tonight! Let's see those pictures. Clouds and forgetfulness made me not get any pictures
