Good News - Picked up my new 2012 MGM Sport 4x4 DCSB today from the dealer. Took it home and installed a TRD Performance Exhaust, door sill protectors and Weathertech DFL's. Backed it out into the driveway to take a few pics.

Now, the Bad News - out in the sun, I noticed the moron who apparently detailed the truck at the dealership wiped it down with either a shitty dirty towel or 1000 grit sandpaper. It has scratches in the clear coat over the entire vehicle. Here's a couple pics that kind of show it, but it's hard to get them to show up very good in pics.

I guess I should have looked a little closer while at the dealership, but I never imagined someone doing this to a brand new vehicle. I called them and they said to bring it back up Monday and they will fix it, but at this point, I don't know if I want them to touch it or not. I worked on a couple of spots to see just how deep the scratches were. Some of them are pretty deep, but I'm pretty sure I can get most of them out. However, I think they need to compensate me somehow for my time. I'm thinking this is going to be at least a 10 hour project to do the entire vehicle. This is the third new vehicle I've purchased from this dealership, and I've never really had any complaints before this.

Do you think I should let them touch it or just do it myself? If I do it myself, what do you think would be fair compensation for my time? I know it's going to get scratched up over the years, but I just don't think a new vehicle should be delivered looking like this.

Congrats on the new truck! But damn, sorry about their messup. Hopefully they can do something about it free of charge.

Nice truck, but those scratches are pretty noticeable. I would definitively take it to the dealer and have them check it out, there mistake should be there fix IMO

Happened to my hood when I got my truck in 03... Took it back to dealer where they tried to buff out the scratches. Ended up with buff marks all over so they replaced my hood.

Good luck... Hold them responsible or they'll take advantage of you

+1. Take it back and let them deal with it. If they can fix it and make it right, cool. But if you try and there's an issue it's on you. It might not be what you want to hear, but it may be harder to fix than you think depending on how bad the scratching is. I'd be pretty upset.

Yea, it does piss me off. You would think they should know better. Boshak, that's exactly what I'm worried about letting them try to buff it out; burn through the paint and f' up the whole truck. I certainly don't want to have it repainted. I'll wait and see what they offer up on Monday. I'd settle for doing it myself if they would give me some free service work or other goodies.

I've done quite a bit of detailing work in my day, so I'm confident I can get most if not all of the scratches out. It's just a time consuming process that should not have to be done on a brand new vehicle. Usually, I wait six months or so before I clay them and do a thorough paint correction on a new vehicle. It's pretty sad when the paint job on my 11 year old Silverado looks better than my brand new Tacoma.

Oh I'd let them do it and make sure you pop in to watch them here and there. Have them explain you to EXACTLY the steps they will be taking. Seriously. Because if something happens it's on THEM. I know you want to make sure it's right and that's why you want to do it yourself but they probably won't compensate you for your time because they won't know exactly what YOU are doing to it. Granted you can bring it in to show them the result but to them, it's nothing that they can ....for lack of a better word... "warranty" once you touch it.

Well, I took it up to the dealer tonight. They agree it should not have been delivered like that. I told them I wasn't too excited about them touching it again. I told them I was pretty certain I could get most if not all of the scratches out myself, but it was going to take a good deal of work on my part, and at this point, I just want to make sure it gets done to my satisfaction. I reminded them that this was the 3rd new vehicle I have purchased from them and that I am a loyal service department customer and then asked them if they would throw in a pair of predator step bars for my time, trouble, and frustration (and to get them a perfect score on their survey). They thought they could probably do this, but wanted to make sure and run it by the general manager tomorrow morning before they commit. In all reality, I would be thrilled if they agree to this. I was actually thinking if I started there, I would be happy with a set for half price. At this point, they have seen the vehicle and I made them aware that I had plenty of pictures of the vehicle, so I took it home and totally debadged it. Paint correction can wait until tomorrow. :D

Debadged is the only way to go. Congrats and good luck with buff job and sux about the crappy detailer. Hopefully someone learns from this.

I'm glad that you went back and relieved that they agreed to take care of it right away. I'm crossing my fingers that you will get the bars. Not only did you have to bring it back and be without it for how ever long it takes for them to work on it, it's the point that you were upset and concerned and WORRIED that you would have to spend your own time fixing it.

I'd ask for a rental car if they are keeping the truck all day.

I won't let them touch it. I'm only asking for the bars to compensate for me doing the work. Either way, I'm gonna do it. I trust myself more than them. I'm just trying to get something out of it for my time. None of the scratches are through the clearcoat. They'll come out with a little work. I'll be stoked if they give me the bars. I'd settle for half price on the bars and be happy. I'd do a paint correction on it evenutally anyway, it's just the fact that it's a brand new truck and this shouldn't have happened.

Just wondering.. How long should the paint cure before it is cut into? Repaint is usually 3 months, I know the factory bake is much hotter, but I am wondering if you may want to wait to be sure. Just tossing that out there. Good luck.

Yea, that's definitely something to think about. My truck was built in early March, so it should be o.k. I don't plan on hitting it that hard. I can always come back later and clean it up a little more. But, thanks for the heads up.

Went to my daughter's middle school band concert tonight, so I didn't get much done. Just finished up claying it and taped off some of the trim. I'll get after it tomorrow night and see how it cleans up. I was surprised just how much contaminant was in new paint. I haven't ever clayed a vehicle this new before.

BTW, missed the call from the dealership this evening. They left a message to call them back. I didn't get a chance, so I'll give them a call in the morning to see if they are throwing in the step bars for free or not. That would be pretty cool and would make me a happy camper if they do. Fingers crossed.

Thanks! I like it much better debadged. And, if you're gonna debadge, best to do it now. Everything comes off and cleans up so much easier. Enjoy your new truck. I hope to get to one of these days. Clocks still sitting at 29 miles.

Placed my order today for new wheels/tires from Tire Rack. Hopefully, I might get some cheap step bars too if things work out. Lift is next, but I want to make sure I don't have any driveline issues, so I'll probably wait a few thousand miles on that.

Well, the dealership wouldn't give me the step bars for free, offered to split the cost with me. I changed my mind and decided to go the N-fab route on the bars, so I ended up with a $200 service voucher. $20/hour for 10 hours of my time isn't bad, I guess. It (paint correction) is something I would have done eventually anyway. From what I've got done so far, it looks like it's gonna clean up just fine.

If it were me I would have tried to take it to a competent body shop and gotten a quote, and made them pay it. But I'm no body or paint guy. Good luck.
