Hey all, I started a thread a few days back regarding repairing a Coleman canoe. The title didn't help me at all and only got one response. Thanks Oldtacomaguy!!

Anyhow, I'll try to edit the title to be a little more specific.

Anyone ever do any repairs to a Coleman canoe? I'll let the pics tell the story.

    Thanks for any help.

Thanks Aaron! I've been doing some reading on this type of repair and it looks like I will need something specific to the type of plastic the canoe is made from. My understanding is that there are oils present in this type of plastic that keep things from adhereing to it, including the "normal" fiberglass stuff.

These guys, (http://www.oakorchardcanoe.com/repair.php) seem to be one of the few people that have any kind of sure-fire repairs to this kind of thing, and they're local, kinda.

I'm thinking of biting the bullet and buying the product they recommend. I'll be sure to keep my other thread updated!

    Thanks for your help!

Thanks, but I've already created my abortion-like attempt at a repair. I followed destructions, but my ability and patience came together and made a mess of things...I think. It doesn't look pretty, but I'm gonna take an angle grinder to it to see if I can clean it up.

I have a few questions regarding my new Yakima rack. I had a lot of road noise so I purchased the wind fairing and it did a good job of cutting down on the noise. However, now when I go over 60mph I hear a tapping on my roof every now and then. I think it's from the wind pulling the fairing feet up then slamming them back down on the roof causing this tapping noise. It's very annoying and am wondering if anyone else has this problem and how to fix it. Second, I'm going to eventually buy the j cradle kayak hooks but for now I want to be able to carry them flat on the rack. However, I can't find any ratchet straps that have hooks big enough to fit on the yakima bars. It seems the yakima bars are too thick for most of the ratchet strap hooks. With that in mind, I'm wondering how yall haul your kayaks flat on your roof?

I haven't had that issue with my fairing. Try taking it off and reinstalling it. Could be that something was just a little off.

As far as how I transport, I use these

The straps I use are these:

I picked up the foam blocks from bass pro. Dicks or just about any other place that sells boats has them though. The Yakima straps I have came with a set of cradles that I didn't like but I am pretty sure you can buy them separately. I have the 2 straps that go driver to passenger side of the car and then 2 that connect front and back of boat to car. They should fit OEM roof rack to the best of my knowledge. The foam blocks are universal and can always be cut (i ended up having to cut part of mine to allow for it to fit around one of the yakima fairing clips) if you need to.

IMO, the J racks aren't the most stable on hwy unless you have 2 boats and tie them together but maybe my crossbars were close to max load...........and do you have enough of the ratchet strap to wrap it around under the crossbar then hook it to itself?

That the exact same setup I use with my oem roof rack and it works great. Very stable at 75mph.

This picture shows the straps tied inside the cab but I later tied them to the cross bars to cut down on wind noise.

Did you put the clear film stick pads on the roof of your truck? I didn't put them on and I wonder if the foam pads on the feet of the fairing actually stick to the clear pads and that's why they are there. I just thought they were there to protect the paint. Also, I think I'm gonna go with your idea of the foam blocks and straps to carry my kayaks. It seems like the j cradle hooks would act like a giant sail on top of my truck at highway speeds.

I just have the clear pieces stuck to the little pads that are attached to the fairing brackets. I have found that the foam block/ strap is the easiest most aerodynamic route. I looked at the j hooks when i was figuring out rack ideas and didnt like how bad it pushed the vehicle around in the wind or just on the highway. I also tried the saddles and wasnt too impressed. While they made it easier to secure the boat, having to lift it an extra 4-5xx after paddling a long time just plain sucked. Foam blocks are super easy to put on the rack and take off and you can just toss the boat up, throw the straps over and be on your way
