I have done all the hi-pro mods for a life time, since I got this truck at a great price, I will be happy with showroom new.
its smooth as a baby's butt> and it just feels right, when shifting gears.
I will just say, that since, 1996 when I read about synthetic gear oil thats all i have used, and never had any problems.
I had a 92 sentra ser and from the day I took her home all I used was Mobil one oil, and put almost 300,000 miles on her and she never used oil.

I used lucas, took all they had at the parts store near me.
now its late, and i'm old, but, if i remember right basic house brand gear oil is now 7.99 a quart... and I got the lucas at advance for 13.99 quart, but, with your time involved, and the fact that it will last longer and protect better, much better extreme heat and cold performance, its worth it.
it not that hard to do just take your time, and take your fill plugs out first!!! then the drain, and wipe any deposits off the drain plug. after changing the others, the last one I did was the rear diff, and I pulled the truck up on ramps to make sure I got every bit out that I could.

"old"? uh, it does say you're a senior member....:D ok, good advice on the ramps. i might need them anyways to get at the front diff. i see a gal of lucas full synth. on Amazon for 42/gal. good deal, but its only 75-90 and I doubt i should be dumping that in the rear diff.

I use a full synthetic 75W90 in both diffs and the T-case. Make sure you do not use a GL-5 gear oil in your manual transmission. It will be corrosive on some of its components. GL-4 only for those.

will it say GL5 on the bottle? this gets a bit confusing. I found mobil 1 LS full syn. at the store tonight for $11/qrt. I plan on using this in everything...and be done with this. I figured limited slip won't hurt anything in my 95 taco.

welp, the specs show it as a GL-5 base. i'll order a couple qts of Red Line 57904 (75W90) Synthetic Gear Oil. It's GL-4. Thx for pointing this out Digiratus

Now that I have a better understanding of the GL4 vs GL5, I look at the amsoil guide and shows mixed results for where to use either product, other that the rear diff., which would be GL5, and xmission being GL4. How do I know if I have LSD? I have manual locking hubs and it's a 1995. Guess I'll have to get into my owners book. Thx for putting up with me here fellas....DM

Are you sure you're on the right bolt? On my truck the drain bolt is a 10mm allen(hex key). The rearmost front diff mounting bolt is a 12mm allen. Just took my entire diff out on tuesday so this is fresh in my mind.

:confused:weird. Mine is definitely a 10mm because that was the biggest size I owned. I had to run to the store to get a 12mm for the diff mount

Don't run any oil with friction modifiers in your trans. It will interfere with the syncros and smooth shifting. Oils that say they are for a limited slip diffs contain friction modifiers to improve performance of the LS function.

Red Line is an excellent choice. I run it in everything. Red Line also makes a very good GL-4 trans oil called MT-90.

Your truck info indicates you have a '95 model. Is it the '95.5 Tacoma? Stock 1st gens did not have a factory LS option. Only 2nd gens do.

going with the MT-90 in xfer and xmssion and considering the mobile 1 LS in diff's. LS won't hurt anything, even though I don't have it, will it?

gonna ask here, as i'm in the middle of my oil changing job. i thought i ordered enough MT90, as my haynes book states 2.3 qt for xmission and 1.2 for transfer case. xfer case was about right, but going closer to 3 qts on manual xmission and oil still not running out, nor can i get at it with makeshift dipstick, about an inch down. clueless where it's going, but apparently just ain't full yet.

gotta ask this. my drain plug is on the bottom right side, and near the top on right side my plug is a #10 hex plug. this is correct? I mean...on the left side, about midway down is a regular plug. This is not the fill plug, is it? the book shows it as being on the right side above drain plug.

If this is correct, than what can I "mix" with the MT-90 GL4 to get it full...just standard GL4? No place local sell the Redline MT90.

    Thx for the help. DM

Drain plug is on the passenger side of tranny at the bottom. Fill plug is on driver side halfway up the tranny.

I recommend closing up the other plug... Open the correct fill plug and let it drain. Check to ensure you're full and close it up.
