Power in the glove box for GPS

Looking for info on wiring behind glove box for ignition power for new GPS on 2011 tacoma.

That's kind of a broad question.

Do you want to tap power? If so get an Add-A-Circuit from LittelFuse or one of the the other companies. Run wires from the interior fuse panel (where you add the Add-A-Circuit) to the glove box and call it done.

You don't want to go cutting and splicing wires behind the dash. It's a recipe for random failure at the Worst Possible Time. I know this firsthand.

 

I will look into the Add-a-circuit, Obscur... I jumped into the instal of the gps and fried the first unit. Got the second one and got it all hooked up through the 12v outlet coming out right beside it. Not as clean as I would like it to be, and don't want to loose that outlet, but works for now until I get more info. Hopefully learned my lesson on this one.

Add-a-fuse is the best way to go.
Other than the lighter/power outlets, the only power behind the glovebox is the ECU and you don't want to mess with that.

 

If it was me, I wouldn't even bother with the add-a-circuit. I would get a nice Blue Sea fuse box, run power and ground from the engine compartment to the fuse box (fuse the power leads, of course), and then tap a circuit on the Blue Sea for m GPS power. That's how I wired up my 2m/440, CB, spare rear lights and a couple of other things in my old Tacoma. The only thing that did not run through the Blue Sea was my KC's (big mistake).

It's more work, but it's cleaner and troubleshooting is methodical.

 

Blue Sea power boxes are awesome, but if you are only adding a couple of accessories, they are overkill.

Big lights and amps? Ya... much cleaner than a bunch of ATO fuse holders hanging off the battery.
