These last couple of days ive been experiencing a popping/clicking sound which seems to emanate from my engine. Now i know that these engines are known to have that constant "ticking" sound but this is something totally different. The main difference is that, unlike the normal ticking noise, this popping noise is intermittent, it happens while in park and after longer trips when its hot (30 miles or more). I first heard it last night when i pulled into a Drive thru window and placed my truck in Park. Wondering if anyone could spare a little wisdom on the topic. :)

I seem to remember someone saying it can be the aluminum cross piece in the bumper, something along the lines of hair line cracks that cause the noise. Mine does it too.

Cool thanks for the info, my truck is at 115k miles and im doubtful it has ever had a tranny flush so my thought was tranny issues. I will be flushing my tranny tomorrow so ill have to see if the popping continues after I perform the flush. If not then ill have to investigate further. Thanks :D

I had the front bumper mounts replaced on my '06 for a popping noise like this.

Did your truck make the noise while on and in "park"? I want to take a close look at my bumper mounts now that you mention it... Would you happen to know where or what the mounts are located next to so i could pin point them?...Im not to familiar with my engine's geography ha ha

    this from another forum...

Ok guys last week I posted that I had my Cab mounts replaced as per the Toyota TSB but the rattle problem remained. I also reported that my Service Manager was told by Toyota of another problem area located with the front bumper. (The big piece of aluminum behind the plastic cover). Now the bumper noise stems from the bumper mounts (or extensions) that fasten the actual bumper to the frame. (see picture below) The mounts (or extenions) and the bolts are made of aluminum. The bolts are attached to the front of that mount and are than welded to make one peice, so it should be very strong. What happened at the factory as per Toyota was when mounting the bumper to the mounts some of the aluminum bolts were over torqued and actually broke the welds that hold the bolts snug into the mount (or extension). The service guy showed me the mounts he took off my truck and on the back you could see the split in the welds. Next he said wiggle the bolts and low and behold all of the bolts on both mounts had lots of play. He said something that's welded shouldn't be wiggling like that. "No sh*t", I said.

So every time I hit a bump, turned a corner or did anything that would cause the a little frame twist I'd hear the "tink tink" noise of the bolts moving around inside the mount or extension. He said he put in a note to Toyota to clearly indicate torque specs for the fix because he said some shops would mount the extensions with an impact gun and could end up breaking the welds to the mounts they just replaced. My mounts were properly torqued with a torque wrench and I'm happy to report that after an hour of driving around on rough roads not a single noise. Hope this helps you guys still dealing with the problem.

...Is this what youre talking about?

Yes. How this theory applies to your situation is these engines sometimes idle a little rough and cause a bit of vibration. If your bumper mounts are weak enough, this vibration could be causing the popping noise.

If this isn't the problem, I'd recommend checking all of the engine/transmission mounts. There were issues with them in '05 to early '06 models.
