I had a 2010 with a old man emu 3" with rear aal's and it rode okay but i was looking to do something a bit different with my 2012. Im sure most of you would say just go with the fox setup but I want to hear input since Bilstein stuff is half the cost. If I went with the fox setup I would do the 2.5 coils with the 2.5 rear shocks with a aal option. The Bilstein route I was thinking was a toytec 5100 coil over with 5160 shocks in the rear with a aal option. Keep in mind I only occasionally off road nothing crazy. Any input would be great.

I know its not like comparing fox to king but I was just wondering if the fox's are more than what i need for every day driving or should i stick with the bilsteins

If you want the best performance and ride. Get some Coilovers and 2.5 rear's

Do you need after market UCA's to run the fox coilover?

OP is looking at the 5160, not 5100's for the rear. The 5160's are a remote resevior shock but seem to only be made for GM trucks. I'd imagine they're much better than the standard 5100's but still not in the same league as the Fox shocks. Fox shocks are also rebuildable, Bilsteins are not so if you plan on keeping the truck for a long time, it might be cheaper in the long run to go with Fox shocks and a few rebuilds vs. replacing the Bilsteins.

I hate to bring up an old topic, but looking at buy bilsteins..for the back, is there any reason to get the 5160's over 5100's?(Pugga's seems to say they are better..but not as good as fox/icon/etc)..would they help make the ride smoother perhaps?

I don't have any personal experience with them but the 5160 is a remote reservior shock which, assuming the remote reserviors aren't just for show, should allow the shock oil to keep cool while on high speed rough terrain. The 5160's seem to be geared toward GM applications so I also don't know how the length will be on a Tacoma (whether you'd need extended bumps, more lift, etc).

The reason I said they wouldn't be as good as Fox, Icon or King is because of the adjustability of those brands. The high end shocks can be custom valved and are rebuildable. I don't not believe the Bilstein shocks allow for custom valving or the ability to be rebuilt.

I would call Downsouth Motors, tell them the type of driving you do and they can help you decide if the 5160 would be a better choice over the 5100s for your application.

Light bar and bumper guard, 3/16 steel skid plates for engine, tranny and transfer box, OME 881 springs with 5100 shocks at mid clip. AAL in rear. Positraction rear diff.
The 5160 has a remote res. and therefore runs cooler. It's a step up from a 5100.

    Hey guys,

    New to this and trucks.

Ive got to replace my Bilstein suspension but don't really know if it is necessary to replace my coil over spring as well? I was hoping to upgrade a bit to FOX 2.0 Performance shocks over the Bilstein 5100's. Im a mountain biker so I rely on FOX a ton. I could really use some help.

We are constantly driving on fire service roads out here in WA but I would also like to do some lighter off roading to get to some sweet camp spots!

What would be my best option and what is a UCA???
