Rust on frame - too much?

I took some pix of my 2005 trd tacoma with < 40k miles. This looks like a lot of rust to me. What do people think? I called Toyota today and asked if there was any kind of recall or repair and they're checking (computers were down, I guess). I know there was a big recall for prior year tacos, but I don't think for 2005.
Has anyone had any experience with getting Toyota to treat/compensate/fix some 2005+ rusty taco frames?

Well #1, Welcome to TW.

#2 that looks like alot to me! No recal that I know of for 05's. It's worth a shot, but I doubt Toyota will cover this.

#3, Living on Jupiter, that might cause rust. Although didn't think much moisture there, whats it like?

 

Also the short answer is NO. I just had to fix my rust spots again. but Toyota keeps washign their hands from any rust issue on those trucks. Still register with them and get truck to dealership. In case things turn worse and you need to go after them

Holy cow that's a lot of rust. I have an '09 with ~30k, and have a bit of rust... but not bad at all. Most of it is from rocks/pebbles getting kicked up and knicking the paint. Yours... looks WAY worse than that.

Let us know what Toyota does for ya. Unfortunately they probably won't do much, unless you did the extended warranty... and even still, they could deny it.

 

Damn... I feel a LOT better about mine now! I've got a 2007 with around 70k miles and it doesn't look anywhere near as bad as yours. Also, good luck getting an alignment, your LCA bolt just looks like a ball of rust

 

OP, yeah that doesnt look good. I would take it into the dealership and have them look at it and see what they recommend. You need to do something to stop that rust, even if its taking a wire brush to it and coating it with some paint like rustoleam every few months.

 

OP , do you load / unload a boat into salt water a lot ?

 

Most likely a dealership will recommend sand blasting and undercoating but I agree, something needs to be done to stop the rust or it will turn into something more serious.

In Jupiter, not on. It's in Minnesota IIRC. With lots of snow and salted roads.

OZ might be right, that looks like rust from submersion in salt water, not just salty roads. They salt the hell out of the roads up here in New England and my frame doesn't look nearly that bad with almost twice the miles.

Damn! I'm glad I live where they don't salt the roads. That looks like some bad cancer. My 2004 I just sold looks like brand new under and over.

This isn't an issue of rusty frames, but corrosive environment. The shock body and attachment bolt are rusting right along with the frame, and these parts have very durable coatings. If you launch boats into seawater or drive on salted roads, rinse the undercarriage off as soon as possible at a car wash, or rust will develop, no matter the vehicle.

 

TThose shocks are rusted too which would indicate that its not some issue with the frame but the environment. I have frineds that live on the beach with heavy surf = losts of salt spray and in 3 years vehicles (new or not) look like yours.

 

Living in the salt belt can be killer on vehicles. Nothing that can't be fixed to prevent serious issues down the line.

I'd start with the removable components (A-arms, Leaf Springs, Axle Housing, etc). Sand blast/wire brush the components as best you can, then use a good rust paint (POR-15 is at the top of my list for this).

Then move on to the frame/structural components (a lift would be good for this if you can find/have access to one). You can sand blast the rear and under cab sections of the frame no problem but as you get closer to the front just be slow and careful not to directly hit any hoses or wires directly on. Then use a wire brush on any parts you can sand blast. POR-15 (following their instructions to the letter) everything and it'll last much longer then the crappy stock coating.
