4000 # trailer pulling question(s)...

So, I started my own business and I now have an enclosed trailer that's pushing 4000#'s with all of my gear in it. I pretty much just leave the trailer attached 24/7 and only take it off when I hook up my boat.

My rear is sagging pretty good with the trailer on and my question is, is that okay? To just leave my truck like that all the time? Am I damaging my leafs in the rear or anything? I have the stock 2012 TRD Off-Road suspension.

My other question would be: Can anyone suggest a good brake controller for my Taco?

If you tow that much, I'd look into a set of air bags and possibly a weight distributing hitch setup.

 

HRmmm.. Weight Distribution.. I'm not entirely sure what that's for, but I can say that I've passed and been passed by Semi's and the trailer stays right behind me. Doesn't feel unsafe... Might be the better way to go though..

I'm going to take a picture of how it's sitting now maybe that'll help some. I also see now that there is a "towing" section. This may have been a better fit there...

 

A weight distribution hitch uses torsion bars to essentially lift up on the rear of the truck which, in turn pushes down on the front end. For trailers with a heavy tongue weight, this helps fight that unweighted front end feeling and takes some of the weight off the rear end and makes the front end take some of it on.

The Tacoma's suspension really does suck from the factory so it's most likely not that you're overweight, is just that the leaf springs are soft. Depending on your situation, air bags or a WDH setup would make towing a bit easier and keep the back end from sagging as much.

For a flat utility type trailer, I'd go with air bags. For a heavier travel trailer, a WDH might be a better option.

 

I don't know how you move that without electric brakes right now! I just bought the cheapest POD off a friend and wired it in with the adapter plug, works great!

 

I have a 19' Travel Trailer around 4000 lbs fully loaded... I use a WDH and a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake controller. I just installed Air Bags to help level the back when the bed is loaded down as well. Haven't pulled the trailer since the air bag install but I like the airbag solution better. It works no matter what I pulling or hauling in the bed. I have the stock leafs without the TSB.

 

Since you are a off-road model did you get the leaf TSB so at least your have a 4 pack of springs instead of 3.

I would do that since it is free and your current leafs are likely done for. Then get a set of air bags to stop the new set from sagging right away.

The weight dist hitch is nice. It is different than the sway control you are likely thinking of by mentioning the trailer not moving when passing semi's.

How much of the weight in your trailer is up front in it.

Have you ever checked each axle weight while hitched up and without the trailer?? Front truck, rear of truck and trailer??

This will show you how the trailer impacts the truck.

I like the idea of airbags. More of a manual control vs. counting on the WDH..

I have a 2012 Off Road, and only 3 leafs. Would there be a TSB for the 4th leaf even on a 2012?

I am not positive if the TSB applies to 2012 truck but it should since the 3 leaf is crap. Post up in the 2nd gen forum and I am sure someone will chime in. I know it covered 2011 but took awhile for toyota to update the TSB to include 2011 after they hit the showroom.

I have towed 3500 with and without trailer brakes and it is a nice addition. Mine were surge brakes so no recommendation on the controller.

The WD hitch setup is nice to have if you haul alot since it spreads the weight throughout the truck and makes it handle better and less sway.

4K is not bad but really depends on what speeds you see and how long of a haul you are doing.

 

reorganize your trailer

i notice people put all the weight on the tongue instead of over the trailer axles. i haul cars all the time with my 05 tacoma and it barely sags at all because i keep the car centered on the trailer instead of all the way forward
