Help bypassing Factory JBL amp

Hey guys,

I ordered a Kenwood DDX719 from crutch field and I have the factory JBL system. I am removing it and installing my own subs. Now my problem is we all know the factory amp powers not only the sub but all the speakers as well so I am trying to bypass the amp.

When speaking with crutch field they are saying that I have to run 4 sets of speaker wires back to the factory harness by the sub and then splice into each positive and negative so that the factory speakers run from the head unit then I will power the subs from the amp I already have.

Does this sound correct?

Any help would be much appreciated as I currently have the vehicle apart and am trying to do the install right now.

That all sounds fine to me. If you are running speaker wire from your own amp to the stock speakers, i think you can splice into the wiring harness that went from the old stock amp, out to the speakers.

Here is a link to a wiring diagram that might help. Check the wire colors and see if this matches up to what your seeing on the stock wiring harness, and you can go from there. Let me know if you figure this out, Ive been looking at doing the same thing but havent tried yet.

 

Oh I just saw that you would be powering the speakers from the new deck, which is fine. I guess the only bitch of it would be you will have to run the speaker wire from the deck all the way back to the wiring harness in the back.

 

Ya, so far it's being a real bitch but that appears to be the way to make it work. Hooked up the front left and it's working like a charm. Headed back out to do the rest of them, I'll let you know if I run into any more problems.

Worked like a champ... I mean it took almost 50' of speaker wire, and a lot of unneccessary connections, but it worked...

I was wondering, did you happen to take any pictures of the splicing into the factory harness in the back? Just wanted to see what it looks like once its all spliced into and finished.

Im putting in a 4 channel amp in the back soon, so I wont need 50' of speaker wire , but it would be cool to see what it looks like to splice into that harness.

 

Here ya go boss... It really wasn't that difficult thanks to the diagram you sent me... I mean if you have ANY questions please feel free to PM me and i'll let you know what we did... We always double checked ourselves, so after everytime we spliced and then hooked into the factory harness, we turned the truck on to make sure we were getting sound out of that speaker. It kept us from going back and having to trace our steps if there was a mistake.

Also, we used posiconnectors and they made our life a hell of a lot easier! Sorry for the crappy pics, but it's late... and I'm lazy. If you want any other pictures feel free to reach out to me, and I'll see if I can get some better ones for you.

 

Haha, looks as I suspected! Hey so did you notice a boost in speaker output at all? I imagine the new deck powers the speakers a little bit more than the stock HU.

 

Surprisingly no... But that's because all the stock speakers were powered off of that amp... Granted it's only 45 watts, but it's an amp nonetheless... So, I really didn't see that much of an increase, but if you're going to bypass that amp and use another one, I'm sure you'll notice a difference!

 

What features would I loose if I removed the jbl system? I am some what fed up with this setup. I already installed a deck and kenwood comps all around.

 

Sounds like the only thing you have yet to remove is the JBL amp... buy a new amp and rewire and you're golden.

Don't forget the little crossovers in the doors.... if you removed the plastic cage for the stock speaker then you got it. Its hiding inside those guys.

 

I don't think you would lose anything... I mean I bypassed it because I wanted to put subs behind my seat with an aftermarket unit... And nothing would work with that stupid JBL amp... But like you saw before, I spliced the cables and all worked like a champ...

 

shit, the pics didn't load the last time I looked at this thread.... TuFer, why did you splice into the factory harness like that?! *ew* You could have got the JBL adapter and saved hours worth of time, and been much more reliable.

 

The hyperlink for the wiring diagram is no working. Do you guy know what wires is what?

 

I didn't know what else to do... I bought the JBL harness from Crutchfield when I went to install... But since I had a sub box that took up all of the space behind the rear seat I didn't kow how else to do it... As soon as I unplugged the amp nothing worked... I figured since it was all powered by that amp, then there was no other way of getting around it... So it took about 30 ft of speaker wire, and was kind of a pain in the ass, but it worked...

 

Do you have the diagram for the jbl harness from the amp?

 

I don't man... I was trying to go back to that website, but it says he received a take down notice... I don't know what that means though

 

From the amp to the speakers? The colors should be standard to Toyota. Just get any wiring diagram and use those colors to figure it out.... OR pull your door panels and check wire color there.

 

so you just ran all new speaker wire to the factory harness? Could you just buy a non jbl harness and wire it like you would any other system?

 

Probably... But that was many moons ago and I no longer own that truck... So I could care less now. Haha
