accidentally got 5w20

I literally just finished draining and refilling the oil. Then I looked at the jug and it's 5w20 instead of 5w30. Do I need to drain it out and go back to get other viscosity? It's an 06 v6, 56k miles. I rarely tow anything other than a 4 wheeleror zero turn lawnmower. And I'm in Georgia, so it will get pretty hot. The oil is Valvoline 5W20 full synthetic. I love my truck like a child and don't want to hurt anything lol

 

I wouldn't worry about it.

 

i dont think it would hurt anything..Most quick change shops probably put what ever is in bulk oil drums anyways, which most likely isnt what the vehicle calls for.

 

That's what toyota puts in mine.

 

You guys all pretty sure? If you're sure that it will have no negative side effects, then I'll take your word for it.

 

I wouldn't worry about it, in canada we have a lot of guys switch over to the 5W20 for use in winter, then back to the 5W30 for summer. Makes for easier winter starts.

What does your manual say? There should be a heat range chart for appropriate viscosities, so it depends on your regional temperatures anticipated before your next change.

edit: Jawja in summer? Yeah, your truck is going to grenade.

 

$30 to change it? Do it and stop worrying.

 

I wouldn't worry a bit, especially syn. You might score a bit better gas mileage even.

Those motors have a sensor that detects oil viscosity and a CEL will come on if you use an incorrect weight

 

Thats because the oil jackets on a hemi are very small

 

^This... I'd take a trip to the local autoparts store, get the correct oil and do a quick drain and refill and be done with it. It probably won't hurt anything but oil is cheap (I'm also learning a valuable lesson about using the correct oil on another vehicle so I might be a bit bias...)

 

The WRONG oil?
Dump the whole thing, change the oil filter, fill it with new oil, then dump that to completely rid it of the old oil....

I am sure it will not blow up, but the heat factor is the reason I would change it out. At higher temps, your truck motor is designed to be protected by 30 wt. and you will be at 20 wt. At some point that will become a factor. But I am considered anal by most who know me...

 

If it were mine I'd leave it in and change it in about half the miles you usually change it at.

Hell Toyota's new standard is 0w20 when you do synthetic at the dealer. So 5w20 is perfectly fine.

 

The 30 is better for high temps for sure. I'd probably worry like you with summer coming on. It's only $20, change it for your peace of mind.

 

Have you looked in your manual? It will have a range of weights and outside temps. If you are within those ranges you are good to go. If not drain and get the right weight. As other have said I would not worry about it. Do look at you engine temp gauge and see if it is running hotter then norm. Funny thing on a 97 Camero I had Loved one brand of oil better the others. Same weights but ran cooler with Peninzoil, over Castrol.... Go figure.
