So no one has a theory as to WHY Toyota doesn't bring a diesel Taco to the US when they already make it in the rest of the world?? No one? Bueller??
Can you say US EPA, US automobile particulate standards? Required testing on "new" models (and a diesel is a new model)? Ford makes diesel cars in Europe, but not here.
The US makes it high priced to do it here, NOT because Toyota won't ship their Hilux on a boat...
And see how much the governement charges you if YOU try and ship that Hilux to the US.

I've heard quite a few theories in this thread... and you are easily the 5th poster to give this conspiracy theory....

 

They actually wouldn't be shipping hilux on a boat. All they would need to do is ship the engines on a boat, which they already do for the TR engines for Tacoma, and have been doing for a long time. Overseas, they use the diesel KD engines in the same platforms as TR and GR already, they would quite literally just bolt right into a Tacoma.

 

When I came to the US in 1997 I was ammazed that there were no small or mid-size crew cab trucks on the market. Everyone told me that there was no market for it in the small trucks, which is why crew cabs were only available on full size work trucks. The rest of the world had small crew cabs for a long time. Then, when they finally introduced crew cabs here it was a runaway success. They just did not know how successful it would be.
The same for diesels. The rest of the world is running on diesels, but the Americans say there is no market for it; it's not worth doing. I bet once they get introduced it will be the same as the crew cabs - people will realize the benefits and they will never look back.

North Americans have been deemed by Toyota to be way to pansy for a real truck with a boxed frame and a diesel engine....and I agree from a marketing standpoint. All the posers driving Tacoma's who should really be driving Prius's would bitch about a real steel bed, the stiff ride, and the noise from the engine would drown out the Miley Cyrus they are listening to. Just look at the threads in here about people bitching about stupid stuff......my leaf spring TSB is to harsh...... my engine ticks to loud......I have sand in my va JJ

We don't need a "Tacoma" with a deisel we need the GD Hilux over here.

Until Americans stop being pu**y* nothing will change. The market dictates sales as well as the government's archaic "environmental" smog restrictions on diesels that are true BS.

Haha so I can smoke whenever and I have loads of torque whenever. I'm in school for diesel anyway so why not. I want a D4D. Do I need one? Who cares, I want one, I'd buy one!

Chances are high I'll just buy a used full size diesel when I'm done and use it to tow the taco wherever, maybe DD it. Unless they come out with a mid size diesel ever.

This poll lacks a "no diesel" option, so is meaningless. The only option is diesel - various vehicles, but all diesel. And, even with that single option, you still have only 240 voting in favor at this point out of thousands here each day. Diesel has never been a popular option for passenger cars and private trucks in this country. A fudged poll isn't going to change that.

One most also remember that manufacturers are currently thinning product lineups, not expanding them. Toyota sold only 110,000 Tacoma's in the USA last year, down 50,000 from ten years earlier. If 10% of those were diesel (relatively typical percentage), the production run would simply be too small to be worthwhile. It would also cut into gasoline truck production by the same percentage, making that less worthwhile as well. To keep production numbers up, Toyota has to focus - and that focus is certainly not going to be on the less popular option (diesel).
