I have a 2006 Tacoma TRD sport DC 4x4 with LSD rear end. For some time now I have been hearing a rattling type of noise from the rear end. I thought it might be the brake drum or wheel bearing, but I jacked up the rear and put it in drive. No noise at all. I removed the drums and found no issues either. I replaced the U-joints and still didn't fix the noise. Could it be that it would only make noise with a load on it? Also, sometimes when I start from a start on a turn, i hear a clunking sound briefly, then nothing after. What do you think the problem is? BTW.>> the rattling noise is constant from all speeds and independent of gear selection or RPM.

Spare tire is solid, u-joints seem to be also. I haven't checked the brake cable yet, but I am doubtful of that.

The clank noise is usually only when from a stop position entering a driveway or just turning. I have pretty much eliminated the leafs as the noise, but will still investigate the possibility.

Currently I have left it in a local independent Lexus/Toyota repair shop for evaluation. I should have a response from them this afternoon.

Oh ya. The clank is only at acceleration forma stop and it does not continue like a CV joint does.
