People, if you buy a certified preowned vehicle from a dealer, check everything behind them! Make them prove every one of the 160 pts. So far, been shafted on TSBs because of mileage already on the vehicle, had to make them replace rear main seal-only because it had remaining powertrain warranty & it cost nothing. Have had to put cabin air filter in-no, not hearing "05s didn't come with them". That's just lame BS. Bought in 09, should've been caught by "160 pt inspection" as advertised. It has the effin place for one, it shoulda been there. Had to tighten the wobbly ass drvr side side mirror before it fell off due to the shitty vibration due to having no suspension worth a crap. Have to be concerned with eng mount bracket frame cave-ins even tho 4 cyl 2wd. It's the same frame. The oil filter wasn't even a toyota one, some no name BS one. It did have a clean air filter in it. So far that's all I found that was actually dealt with correctly. Now comes the part that is gonna have me filing grievance about all this with Toyota North America.....I broke down & scored the 67.00 factory denso plugs from the dealer since nowhere else had them nor could seemingly even get me any densos. The motor seemed to be OK except blaring on coldstarts with high rpms & mileage was about 19 mpg on avg. Sooo, I finally get around to changing them & find some pu$$y a$$ autolite double platinum app 3924 nonsense that the thread/electrode length was 3/8" shorter than the sk20hr11 densos that are supposed to be in it. Hoofuckinray, another colossal "certified" failure! The threads were right & the gap was close is about it. Feel like going to the dealer with all this & startin some shit but I know it'll get nothing but shrugged off so I'll take it a level higher & see if Toyota cares about this dealer shittin up their rep. Probably won't but I'm gonna load them up with all my less than polite play by play on all this BS. Not tryin to get them to do anything for me so it's gonna be the full uncensored y'all suck major ass version & are on the slow road fuckin yourselves out of the game just like the big 3 have been, believe me. So, if anyone's planning on buying certified preowned make them SHOW you all the fresh shit physically that should've been done to meet what they're advertising & undoubtedly are charging extra for. Other dealers should care about this kinda craptacular shit because it falls on them too when they get lumped in with these limp asswipes like when people find this shit & proclaim that all dealers are ripoff ball lickin scammers. Spare me the "all of them aren't like this" because I know that. There is 1 out of every 1,000,000,000 just so people can say that there are good ones. But they all look the same so there's no way to tell. And yes, I shoulda disassembled everything on the truck in the lot to double check, my bad. Luckily, I can & do maintain my own shit so I can catch all the lameness but pity others' at the mercy of the unscrupulous. Not lookin for sympathy or nothin here, just a major head's up for future buyers. Rant over, have a nice day. :D

    getting there....
good post man. go back to some of my earlier posts/threads when i bought my 04 last summer.......................160 point inspection my ass! i had to replace the whole suspension, brakes.........lots of stuff..................they didnt do anything they were supposed to do. even the steering rack was worn to shit.............they replaced it though, finally, because i purchased the wrap warranty........so my warranty is good to 100k miles. i had to do so much stuff to my truck to make it right.....it was absurd that they claimed they did the full 160 pt inspection in the first place.

I looked up those lame plugs & 1995-2007 tacoma is on the list with a thousand other vehicles with god knows how different of an engine but IMO, anything that doesn't have at least the same reach does NOT fit! And a damn cheap ass 3.50 platinum plug cannot do anything but suck trying to replace a 13.00 iridium plug that came in the vehicle from the factory.

I don't agree with the majority of what you said.

For example, whether you are "hearing it" or not, '05's didn't come with cabin air filters, hence, you don't get one.

You have not been "shafted" on TSB's because you bought the vehicle after the warranty period was up. If the previous owner did not have the TSB performed within the warranty period, Toyota has no obligation to do it since the owner obviously did not have a problem that warranted action.

The dealer isn't responsible for you having to be "concerned" about something that may or may not happen in the future. Should they also be responsible for all your oil changes since, you know, you might be concerned about engine failure?

The only complaint I see as legit is in regard to the oil filter. If Toyota did the oil change as stated here: http://www.toyotacertified.com/inspection.html then it should have a Toyota filter on it. Also, the mirror issue could possibly fall under "exterior condition and appearance".

Sounds like a lot of complaining about nothing.

So the crap they jerk you off with about certified preowned 160 pt check to return the vehicle to as new of a condition as possible to instill customer confidence was just shit to justify more money for something that wasn't done. Sure, that's nothing to complain about.

If the thing has the fucking box for the stupid filter then they coulda put one in there in 09 when doing the certification is the whole point on that. You could ask yourself, Why the hell would they bother to put the box there if there wasn't gonna be a filter in it? More wasted expense and effort during manufacturing.

Touche on the TSBs, my bad for not taking the truck apart to find out or do enough research on it before buying. I looked around & got the generalized glowing reports when compared to other trucks but didn't dig deep enough. Agreed, over 36k, still sucks ass to have shit this important to not be recall. A little good will on their part after I quickly brought it to their attention within my 3 mo/3000 comprehensive coverage coulda gone a long way towards me ever buying from them again, especially after popping for the 30k rav 4 a yr ago.

No ,the dealer isn't responsible for my "concerns" & obviously Toyota doesn't care either if they are gonna let this big 3 type quality go out the door for years without doing anything. They also shouldn't be showing things in their advertising that will break shit when done by consumers. BTW, oil changes aren't my concern about the engine failing. More concerned about plastic parts that should be metal for longevity like the intake manifold for instance. Valve cover plastic too? Another big 3 cheap out thing. Or eng mount frame failures.

Oil Filter, no excuse. Rear main, no excuse. Just more don't bother unless somebody notices vs. just doing what is right, which basically covers all of these things.

I guess if you've not been exposed to things that were done without cutting corners at other's expense like back when things were built right, meant to last & where people took pride in their work then it is complaining about nothing since you have no other point of reference than how shit is done now or it has somehow become acceptable.

What does that have to do with anything? And without getting a little more specific that rules out all crash test clips.

I see where you're coming from. But at the same time you're asking the dealership to strip down, reassemble, and road test EVERY used vehicle that hits their lot. Really? It's a used car, it doesn't matter what big sticker they slap on the window. I'm surprised you're confident in doing your own maintenance but you couldn't take 5 minutes to pop the hood and jump under the truck to make sure everything was in place when you first looked at it. Much less notice any apparently obvious defaults (ie mirror) during the test drive.

I'm sure if you were sitting there, pen in hand, ready to sign for the truck and you told them that you wanted all the cheapo shit replaced with OEM it would have been done before you finished reading the fine print.

Whether the dealer was trying to pull a fast one or if they were just lazy any deficiencies that existed on a used vehicle at the time of purchase are at least partially the fault of the buyer.

As I have mentioned in the past, those "160 point inspections" are nothing more than check tire pressure, make sure oil is in the engine, clean air filter, and all the doors, horn, lights, and signals still work. Its a joke.

Yeah...It's a used car. Would you have checked ALL the things you took issue with before you bought it if you bought it from a private party?? Then why not check it when you buy it from a dealer??

It sounds like he has some valid gripes- but buying from a dealer is no reason to just trust them. They are the professionals but they are humans. Hold them to the standard (which is why having the list for the 160 point inspection is important) or demand your money back (at least some of it) if they failed.

Then, each vehicle is reconditioned to Toyota's exacting standards by factory-trained Toyota Technicians. We want the vehicles to look and feel as new as possible and we know you do too. We believe this helps maintain the value, as well as creates pride in ownership of Toyota Certified Used Vehicles.

this is what the website says, as far as checking every used car no. But the ones that they deam certified, they do and should tear them apart and road test them.

i can tell you this shit dont happen, at least not when i traded my 06 for an 04 back this past summer. all they did was change the damn oil...............left a dirty ass air filter in there even. hell...they even put the wrong windshield wipers on.:D i had to basically do a whole new suspension.....even 3 of the 4 shocks were leaking....brakes were shot.....so i dont go by shit on any kind of "inspections" on used cars anymore.

I would print that out, And take it back to them!

kind of like what my friend went through when his front diff broke right off his dodge. Dealer kept saying "You had it off road" Which he didn't.. not really. just running over a pile of dirt.

He got a lawyer. and basically went along the "you show your trucks off road in commercials, False advertising" type thing.
He got it fixed under warranty, and out of court.

Have you read the link I provided? If you have, then you'd know that most of the things you're complaining about are not covered within that 160 point inspection. All your talk about "when things were built right" and what SHOULD be done is irrelevant to the matter at hand if it isn't covered under the inspection in the first place.

Now, I haven't given my opinion on it yet so I will now: I DO think that most of those things should be taken care of. I DO think that the dealership should perform ALL TSB's when selling a "certified" vehicle.

The fact is, and this is not an attack on you, the marketing strategy worked on you. You bought into the "certified" nonsense and this is the result. I know from past experience not to trust anything they tell me and to do my research and verify everything myself.

Live and learn but you still have a good truck that will last you a long time.

Nope, expecting what they're saying is what they're doing just like would be expected of me.

Did take lot more than 5 minutes to look it over, pointed out several things including the rr main drip. They even tried to sluff that off as messy oil change. Shoulda taken all day to find more. Try doin that with your wife there. Taking her was my mistake. Test drive isn't on some offroad course nor was it the same as what you'd experience during normal driving. Have you tried going more than around a few damn blocks on a test drive? They get all nervous & act like their gonna need to call cops. Tightening mirror bolts no biggy, just the principal. You might ask the same thing about whoever was paid to do shakedown at dealer before certifying. I shouldn't have to wipe their ass for them when this is the business they're in. I should be able to have some confidence in what has supposedly been done. I shouldn't as a buyer have to spend a coupla days with the vehicle before buying it to have every damn nut & bolt checked out before purchasing with confidence.

And when pen is in hand they're makin all these no worries about your quesxtions just bring it back in shit then when you do is a whole other bunch of shit. Excuses for everything.

FYI, I know it's my bad for not completely disassembling the truck & keeping their dealership open all nite while I research questions that arise during the purchase. I'm thinkin they'd find that unreasonable & make me leave. You won't cover every question that'll come up with it beforehand researching every piece of it for weeks ahead of time anyway.

    Exactly

    You'd think & expect so.

Correct, a bad one for consumers.

We'll see how far that goes....

    Hmmm, it's what I expected.

C'mon tho, oil filter & selling reconditioned as new with fucking autolite plugs? Complete inexcusable ripoff lameness! Simple basic shit, shoulda been done.

Yes, link was read......again. Same list I read before hand. It was the list I expected them to follow.

The inspection you speak of.......? The initial one before truck left factory? The one done before initial sale? The one not done because there was no safety issue with frames caving in or shitty leafs making the truck handle in unsafe manner from skating by with TSB instead of recall like it shoulda been? The one done when reconditioning as new to resell? Or just mine because I only spent a couple of hours with it before buying it? I do try to be much more comprehensive about shit like this than I'm ever allowed to be for multiple reasons. Mostly due to people acting like your out of your mind to ask what you're asking from them. ie keeping dealer open past midnight, taking vehicle to have it checked out somewhere else, etc.

I live & learn continuosly. Unfortunatley most of what you learn is considered unreasonable when applying it going forward, like that kinda thing never happens kinda crap. We'll see how long it holds up under delicate normal use. I have no faith in it lasting 25 yrs like the last one did in the face of constant abuse & nonsense. It never failed period, much less with any simple shit like is going on now. Tell me why a rr main won't go 200k before leaking a bit now days? Rubber not is good? Just am spoiled from all the other ones from 1972 forward being bulletproof destruction derby strength stuff.

Again, fixing any of this is no big deal, just all the little simple shit adds up to big pile of crooked ass lame irritating bullshit, especially when you have to waste time dealing with it when you could be out enjoying a meet or something much better instead of trying to hold people to their word when you get hammered by it if you don't keep yours.

Like I mentioned above, spew it, make lame shit known, maybe help someone else from same shit then move on.......it is interesting tho the differing opinions of letting people get by with shit or not.
