I prefer the automatic in my daily driver(truck) but would never want a sports car or motorcycle with one, manual all the way for them.

No worries. If I was still in my 20s I'd probably want to fight. I'm now pushing my mid 30s. Not really worth it anymore. I have experience beyond my years both good and bad. You would probably say I have a "checkered" past. I have however owned 10 cars/trucks including my taco so I've definetly got my share of experience with both manuals and autos. Just like throwing my $.02 out there. And wanted to share my experience pushing the envelope at how fast the trucks are.

If I were your buddy, I'd be taking off with the auto in 3rd and run it to near redline before hitting 4th. At 70, I'd drop it to 4th and hit the gas. The stick may be faster, but I know the auto gets up and scoots if you use the gears.

Sorry should have specified the 5 speed auto trans is for the 2nd gen tacos. I asked our field rep for NY about it before when I installed my supercharger. I wanted to know how much the trans would handle before I blow it through the floor and he told me that it was built for the tundra 4.6 and that it would be strong enough for the power I want. The 6 speed auto only comes with the 4.7 or 5.7 tundra and sequoia and the 6 speed manual is only avalible for the 2nd gen taco and the fj cruiser (Fuckin Junk Cruiser):D

I have the same problem, Only the sticks can't hang with my auto.
Pretty sure the factory shows the auto quicker. Cause dam sure your losing the first four gears. From a dead start. bring your stick and your cash.
    100 a gear no worries!
Esp if have oversized rubber. Gotta be slow. Maybe your friends just is a dog!

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Do they even make a motorcycle with an automatic? I've never heard of or seen such a thing before.

How can you drive stick while drinking beers and smoking bowls?? JK!

I do love my Auto though makes drivig a breeze. I can downshift gears on the fly (engine breaking), no clutch to replace or throwout bearing. Its also easier for offroading IMO as well.

All of my vehicles are automatics and I would never buy a new vehicle with a manual again. Why? Because I just don't wanna' mess around with a clutch anymore.
You members that enjoy shifting a manual transmission, good for you. Not me. Please don't bullsh#t me about more control of the transmission with a manual. My automatic is always in the correct gear: REVERSE when I'm backing down, DRIVE when I'm underway and PARK when moored. Control? The gas pedal makes the truck go, the brake pedal makes the truck stop.
Neither is really superior, it's just a matter of personal preference.
Edit: I forgot to answer the OPs question, Toyota automatics are strong & reliable and can handle any condition the truck will be put in, just like a manual.

Some ATV manufacturers (not sure if this has progressed to the motorcycle market at all) use an actuator on the old shift rod design (and eliminate the foot shifter), and with a computer control can make it run like an 'automatic'. Keep the centrifugal clutch and it could potentially drive a motorcycle. I think at one point Can Am equipped a low-end spyder this way... I think. Afaik they've gone the CVT route since.

If the taco gets the 6 speed auto I may have to trade up.

The 6 speed manual should be -and is- marginally faster when it's in gear and the go-juice is flowing. The gears are shorter. Unfortunately between the Aisin's clunk'n'crunch shifting, the frame/rear leaves winding up (and violently uncoiling with every shift) like a giant slinky, and the aforementioned tendency's effect upon getting and keeping traction out of the hole, not to mention managing clutch slip, it becomes totally a matter of how well the driver can scale that vertical learning curve and overcome the truck's innate need to screw up the process. Considering the auto's punch-go-win philosophy, it's no wonder C&D said the auto was faster.

Although, the 16.1 sec 1/4 mile they reported is pretty bad. The old 105 hp civics were that fast.
